We have a 72 fj40 with the F engine. My brothers and I are looking to drop a 350 into it. Right now we are planning on keeping our three speed and transfer case in tact. Is this a good plan? If a new brake booster doesnt fix our braking issues We are also looking to swap out the front axle with a small truck axle or older LC axle for disc breaks. Does anyone know of threads that I can look at to learn from other peoples trials and tribulations. Or suggestions. I appreciate any help thanks Txcruizerfj40

I would strongly recommend replacing the unsyncronized 3-spd w/ a more modern 4-speed transmission while you're swapping.

Also, if the vehicle is going to have twice the horsepower after the swap, it would make sense to have twice the brakes and twice the steering. Please ditch the drum brakes that you cannot keep properly adjusted and go with 4WDB, and ditch the loose worm & roller steering box for any other recirculating ball PS box (minitruck, FJ40, FJ60, scout, sag...)

I would second the above mentioned swap on the breaks. I had a '67 FJ40 with a mild 350 that still had the original drum breaks. I had to put it in neutral (350 turbo tran) at every stop light because it would not stay put without me standing on the break.

Just some personal experience for you to chew on. I personally like the 350, but other parts need to be addressed, too.

350 w/ 3spd

There are a couple of rigs running in my area with that combo and have no problems :) but keep in mind they don't do stupid stuff (dog-em) either ;)
