what is the name of the steel plate part that goes behind the flywheel that basically protects against mud and debris from getting inside the bellhousing area? its a cover basically that gets mounted behind flywheel and bolts into the bellhousing as well. I cannot seem to find mine for my H55F on 83 BJ42? Are they the same identically for the 4 speed bellhousing or where can I get one now that I cant find?

Rob

There is NO difference in the bellhousing for an H55 or an H42 or H41. The differences are at the other end of the transmission. The intermediate plate should fit just fine no matter which transmission it was originally used for.

thanks, so what is that part called that I am looking for? My original mechanic is no longer to be found, nor is that piece which is all I need now? is it just called the bellhousing dust shield cover?

I think you're referring to an inspection cover that are found on F / 2f bell-housings ?
H55F bell housings don't have inspection covers on them.

cheers.

He's got a 3B which has a heavy sheet metal plate that goes between the engine and tranny. It's the same for all trannies.

I can't remember for sure but there is a length difference (as well as a spline count difference) for B engines versus F or H. Perhaps that metal block is to compensate for it assuming the bell housings are identical. I have a 3B / H55F in a H42 down at the shop, I'll take a look and photo sometime in the next couple days.

Yes, there is a difference but this is just a heavy sheet metal plate, nothing more. This is the best I could do for a picture. I'm thinking it's the large plate in the lower right of this picture.

cruiser guy, i cannot not read, but what is the nomenclature for that piece so I can call SOR and ask if they can get one?

Thank

I believe its called a Flex plate in cruiser terms.

Flex plate is what they call the plate that replaces the flywheel on automatic transmissions. The Automatic transmission use a plate that fits behind the flex plate and Toyota calls it a adapter plate. I doubt this is the same plate. It's heavy enough but I doubt a manual transmission would just bolt up to it.

A flywheel is replaced by a torque converter in an automatic tranny set up.
No the bell housing does not bolt up to it.

Flex Plates
The flex plate is similar to the flywheel. The difference is that the flex plate is used with an automatic transmission and the flywheel is used on a manual transmission. The flex plate is not as strong and as thick as the flywheel. They both act to transfer power from the engine to the transmission.

In any case, the plate in question here is NOT a flex plate. Its just a simple cover, it does not flex, spin, or do anything at all apart from get dirty. Just a lowly Rear End Plate.
