So i have a 4 barrel carb. Wen i step on it i can see only 2 barrels open. Wen i maually move the links to make the other 2 open the engine obviously revs up really fast. The links to the unopen barrels seem to be connect to an electronic choke i believe. So does this mean these 2 barrels are only for the coke. Can i make this open somehow with normal drivin.
thanks for the help
im not too much of an engine guy

what engine?

what carb?

what, what, what

The secondaries don't connect to the choke. There are 2 kinds: vacuum and mechanical. Q-jets have vacuum, Holley's can have either. Q-jets have a flap on the top of the venturi (it's not the throtle plate) that you might see open a little when you move the linkage. Holleys you can't see open unless you're looking down the throat.

vaccum or mechanical

the thing you are thinking is an electric choke could be the diaphragm housing for a vacuum secondary.

If I remember right the old Qjets had an adjustment screw on the spring and you could only move it slightly or mess up the spring so be careful with it
with vacuum secondaries you can find different springs to control the rate they open---too fast on part throttle and your engine will stumble

Here's some words from Holley on vacuum types

The secondaries will not open by free revving the engine. The engine needs to be under a load before they will open. If you are still uncertain if they are opening or not you can take a normal paperclip and clip it onto the secondary diaphram rod. You will then push it up against the bottom of the secondary diaphram housing, now you will need to go out and drive the vehicle. When you return you will be able to look at the position of the paperclip on the rod. If it is lower on the rod then you can tell the secondaries opened and how far they opened. This is useful in determining if you need a heavier or lighter secondary spring.

you see what they are saying? just clip something on the rod right up close and go out and give it some boot--- if it moves it will be in a different spot even a bread twisty tie could do this or a zip tie if not too tight--it just needs to be able to slide to another position on the rod without being loose or binding

The other type is mechanical and they open progressively with the throttle and may take some adjusting

post a pic and you'll find out for sure or make and model anyway
