The web site is thin on details of this bumper, so I was hoping for some feedback. Does the tire carrier lock open somehow? Thats one of the features I love about the slee bumper and would be a deal breaker for me if the hanna doesn't have it. Also, how do you feel about the overall quality of the bumper. Does it squeek or rattle at all? Also, how does the carrier latch closed? Any pictures or additional comments would be appreciated.

I don't know if the tire thingy locks open but I can tell you that his stuff is top notch. I am getting a pair of his sliders for my FJ60, I saw a lot of his stuff on the rigs at Surf and Turf in Pismo a couple of months ago.

I saw Jason put one of the first tire carrier versions on his 80. Here are my impressions

1. Don't know if it locks open-sorry. It does swing so smoothly and easily tho, even with a 315 and hi-lift on it

2. It is fantastic quality! Man, that thing is going outlive your grandkids. It is a really impressive piece, somehow I don't think you will have many tailgaters after mounting one of these unless they have a deathwish.

3. it takes...8? bolts, slides right on- solid. Jason put it on in minutes.

I think the way it is designed you can put the longest hi-lift on it and not stick out past the truck.

PM Ken at fj40m4 to find out if it locks open (or better yet call him and leave a message).

He was just on here answering questions about sliders.

Ken builds great stuff.

I have the new updated version of the hanna bumper..I have pics but my laptop is down for the count so I cant post pics as of now...There is a gas shock just like the one that holds up the rear hatch and the front hood on the swing out..It is forceful enough that it keeps the tire carrier open. I posted some pics in an earlier thread...Search under Hanna bumper or kaymar rear bumper...I posted a couple of pics under that thread..Any other questions jus ask..

Would the gas shock hold it open on a steep sidehill?
Cheers,
Sean

Sean poses a good question. I saw the prototype at CM04 and it was top-notch.

Both Ken and Christo build very nice stuff. It is nip-and-tuck to decide which to like better. I have components on my vehicle from both gentlemen and I am completely satisfied with both............

I have Christo's rear bumper and it does not have a gas cylinder on it. It swings open however you allow it to (you should keep ahold of it as you open or close it) and it has a positive locking-pin to hold it open. The pin drops in place, automaticly, under spring pressure and you need to manually release it to close the carrier.

I do have a bit of a concern regarding pressurized struts in a dirty environment such as being installed in an exposed application on the back end of an off-road vehicle that spends a good deal of time being dirty. I imagine that the durability of the struts would be well tested in such an environment.

Yes the gas shock is strong enough to hold it open on a hill...Ken built me a top notch bumper and for the price I paid no one else can come close...Its worth the extra bling to get the tire carrier..

how about a URL for hanna's products?

thx

We use a gas spring to hold the tire carrier open. Open the latch and the tire swing-out slowly pivots open and holds just past 90 deg of the bumper.

nice. I am wondering why would it not pivot 180 degrees so you can access the back from the sidewalk when parked in traffic?

In my opinion the swing-out is easier and faster to open and close on and off the trail by having the swing-out pivot just past 90 degs.
