I have getting the bug lately to try and import a 70 now that I have an 80 I have been driving for the last three years. After living in Costa Rica for three years I have good connections and could probably find a decent 70 now that the 86's are eligible to be imported. My question is, how hard is it to find parts for these things stateside? I've always wanted a 70 but I'm already worried that I won't be able to get parts for my 96 in the next couple of years:( I know in other countries there are plenty of things still on the road I just want to know are most parts obsolete or readily accessible?
 
Most parts can be obtained through patience and 'MUD vendors.

It depends on the part. The 70 Series' largest market is Australia, so finding parts there is the best idea. Toyota still makes parts for many of the 70, especially if it is a part that hasn't changed with the sale of the VDJ, HZJ or GRJ 70s. Some of the older body panels may not be available OEM but Australia should have lots even today.
 
Definitely need patience when getting parts for 70 series in the US.
 
I believe the importation restriction is 25 years old, so you could get a 1990 or '91.
I got an '88 BJ74 last year.

There is some parts overlap with HJ60 series that were sold here in the states. I got brake parts from RockAuto and NAPA.
The Toyota Electronic Parts Catalog allows you to search for model cross-overs.

Some bits are one-of-a-kind because mine is RHD. I had to have the brake master and brake booster rebuilt by a specialty shop.
My radiator too was rebuilt close to home.
I have found a guy who is able to manufacture/copy any hose or metal tube.

Many times I will see a part is for sale on Australia's eBay but further reading shows that the seller can't (won't?) ship to the USA.
Shipping costs can be a killer.

I have had very good experiences with Amayama and vendors here on MUD.
 
TMS USA has "restricted" the vast majority of the 7x variant parts as "non-import" even though there is some stock in the Japan warehouse in Ontario CA. In order to get any of this stuff released to a US dealer the US Customs import paperwork and the NHTSA HS7 forms on the vehicle in question must be submitted to TMS USA before they will "consider" supplying them. Don't hold your breath however.

It is no longer enough that the vehicle is in the country with a US license plate hanging on the back of it. :bang:
 
Thanks guys! Lots of good information for sure. I'm going down to Costa Rica this summer for a couple of weeks and do some scouting. I have a good friend who is an awesome mechanic and personal friend. I'm going to have him put some feelers out and see what we can come up with. I'd actually like to to find one of these.....if I can just find out what the government does with them once they are out of service.

A preliminary search turned out more than a few 70's.....still pretty spendy considering you have to import them:( But then again, all cars are expensive in Costa Rica and diesel more desirable considering gas is 6 bucks a gallon!
 
No such thing as a cheap landcruiser.
 
I now have 80 Series Brake Master Cylinder, 60 Series stainless steel brake lines, 60 Series rotors and calipers as they are better and still available
