My wife would like to buy a pre 88 fj60 because of the round headlights vs. the dual square ones. what's the difference between the 60 and 62? other than rust and leaks, what else should we look out for? and we'll have a 95 saab 900 for sale if anyone is interested.

Well, one is a 60, and the other is a 62.

Hope that helps.

A 62 is better, that's all. Other than the stupid headlights.

Well that MIGHT be true ifn 62's had DIESEL engines, but they didnt!

So, that means they are second fiddle, diddle!

That depends if you like a manual or an auto. I like both, but decided on a 60 cause of the lack of electronic crap (power windows, locks, etc). I'm thinking of switching to an auto A440 instead of the H55F. Still haven't decided.

Slush box, slush box, aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I like the symplicity of the lack of power crap too.

What's wrong with a slushbox? Lack of reliability maybe? Same can be said about a manual. One's clutch could take a dump out in the middle of BFE too.

im just teasing you. Although there is more that can go wrong with an auto than a manual for sure. Know the history of your clutch install and mileage and you're safe.

I like autos for hard core wheeling, and manuals all the rest of the time.

I'm with TB (of course, as another 60 owner  ). I am working at an automatic transmission aftermarket company currently, and with automatics there is a LOT more that can go wrong that is a LOT harder to fix. But toyota's unit is pretty good and they have there benefits as well. I can carry a spare clutch and somewhat comfortably change it on the trail if necessary, but automatics are another story. I am just a lot more comfortable with the ol' direct drives than I am with the slush boxes. Plus, our diesels come with hand throttles which help in tricky off-road situations... :D

so 62's have the comfort features like power windows and locks and an automatic. 60's are more bare bones and have manuals. that's all i got out of 9 replies.

...and 62's have the bigger side mirrors. gasser 60's have the small ones but diesel 60's have the bigger style as well. Also, there has been talk of 62s coming with an additional rear leaf to help with sag, can' verify this though...oh yeah and 62s have more a little more power with fuel injection.....
That's right, I forgot about the EFI, also I believe the short block was shaved some to increase power (3FE).

There are at least as many differences as there are similarities. Other little differences include rear shoulder strap seat belts, rear head rests, different dash, glove box grab bar, different steering wheel, rear sway bar, etc. etc. etc. etc............... There are fewer differences between later model 60's (85-87) and 62's but the jump from 60 -> 62 was pretty big excluding the body style.

the cool round headlights.

has anyone ever changed the front end of the 62 with the 60's grill and headlights?
what were the years of production for the 60 and the 62?
