Good Lord, this is worth thou$and$ alone. The CC in the GX is atrocious.
You ain't joking. A strong headwind and ANY % of elevation makes the GX's cruise gear hunt atrociously.

Any issues with running a tune in California? Issues passing SMOG?

If you buy the VF tuner single VIN license and cable you can reload the stock tune a few weeks before a smog check. Then load the custom tune afterwards.

If it has a CARB EO number, you can pass smog inspection with the tune installed. It causes a lot of head-scratching by the smog guy but unless they give up in frustration, it will work. Bring all the documentation you have.

I don't think the YotaWerks tunes have an EO number but it's worth asking. The more people who ask the more likely there are to decide it's worth the cost. The smog test checks the ECU for tunes now, at least if you're in a high smog test county. I do not know how they identify that it's been tuned. Sometimes the tuners that put the "stock" tune back on put on a tune that has the stock tables but isn not an actual factory tune. I don't know if the test will pass that.

I have a pedal commander that came with my 06 Tundra when I bought it, and when it's on the higher sensitivity settings cruise control is pretty much unusable.

I installed the ShiftPower throttle mod today, easy install. The difference is dramatic. I will use this until I finish researching available tunes and decide on one next year some time.

The nice thing about throttle controllers is that they change your experience every. single. time. you. drive.

Other mods only come in handy (or even noticeable) infrequently, or when off-roading, etc.

Generally any reputable "tuner" will be able to tell you if it's CA legal or not, assuming it's not some Mama's basement hacker making it.

Thanks, rM2. Have you installed a tune on your GX, or at least researched it? I realize you are in CA, just wondering your experience with this subject...

Has anyone A/B'd throttle response kits vs just using manual shift always? I'm on the fence about buying a controller - City driving I leave it in S3, and highway, depending on traffic is anywhere from S3 to S6. i shift like its a manual at times, because traffic on the freeways 'round here are horrible.

Drive in manual mode give me the response I'm looking for, only down side is if you forget you're in s2 or s3 and find yourself doing 80mph, almost kissing the redline😵‍💫

personally, i'd be too worried about bricking it if I was loading different tunes always. I'd buy a second ECU and swap them in and out, but thats just me.

fyi (but read article, theres a few work arounds)

ECU-tuned cars will now automatically flunk California smog testing - https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/ecu-tuned-cars-will-now-automatically-flunk-california-smog-testing/

I've loaded and reloaded mine several times. No issues. The ECU swap requires lots of plugging and unplugging and could result in connector issues.

Super helpful. Thank you!

OK, after some research, I have found that OTT (Overland Taylor) offers a CARB EO compliant tune that should pass SMOG testing in CA. And the tune addresses issues like throttle mapping, TCU tune, and optimized HP/TQ for the 4.6L V8. The tune is available for 2010-2023, but not model year 2022. According to an Orange Counter tuner, Quoc at TK-421 Tuning, they are not able to access the computer on the 2022 model year.

This just seems nuts! Does any one have any insights into the issue with tuning 2022's?

Has anyone successfully tuned a 2022 GX460 that can share their experience?

i'm glad you never had a issue, but that doesnt mean something cant go wrong. This is part of the TOS for "tuned by loi"

In-case of any software bugs/issues or an ECU brick, it is standard procedure for me to supply VF Tuner with the tune file that caused the ECU bricking or any software errors that occur when selecting the tune file. VF Tuner checks and makes sure the tune file is not corrupted or a bad table that caused the bricking.

Your risk appetite / assessment thinks you have less risk of bricking your ecu than breaking a connector, mine this the inverse. I have a molex pin extractor and know how to use it 🤣 . I'd rather swap a plug than be without a vehicle until a can get a ECU from the factory. Back to bricking, I've heard too many horror stories of people bricking their devices trying to root them. I'd rather swap and take my chances. Its not like the plug is a RJ-11 or RJ- 45. the plastic is pretty stout.

Being that you are in TN, you probably also don't have emissions and would have no reason to load/reload a tune to pass an inspection. Luckily I'm in the same boat here in MO and can modify my rig as much as I want :). Lots of folks have been loading these YotaWerx tunes across the Toyota suite of trucks and SUVs; I have not seen any reports of someone bricking one of the ECUs (though they of course may be happening). It's honestly been one of the better upgrades for rig, the midrange power gains were very real and it pulls much harder (especially when towing).

I've pulled my ECU connectors out a few times to add in the WAT lockup controller. The wires are pretty small (22 ga or smaller) and barley longer than they need to be, and there is limited room to work in that area. I'm far from a electronics whiz, but it's definitely been a pain (at least for me) to splice up that harness and work on it.

thanks for the info

No, not in my GX, I tried one in my old F350 crewcab 4x4 that I built out as an overlander, but it never worked right.
May I ask what you're looking to get out of the tuner?
  • Better MPG
  • A little more oomph?
  • Better throttle response?
  • Better shift pattern?
