Has anyone used Red Line Synthetic "Lightweight Shockproof Gear Oil" in the diffs or t-case of their FZJ? I ask because Toyota sells it for $6.63/qt and I am about to change the fluids in the transfer case and differentials. Just wondering if anyone has had any bad experiences with this oil?

I don't believe the shockproof oil is the proper oil for that application. The 75w-90 gear lube is. Call Dave at Redline and ask before using it.

Hey Andrew,

For what it is worth, if you call Redline I am sure they will recommend you use the 75W90 gear oil, saying the shockproof is really designed for racing applications. I’ve talked to him several times about gear oil applications for Land Rovers, and that seems to be his standard answer. However, I can tell you that RedLine Australia has been recommending the Shockproof gear oils for Land Rover transfer cases and differentials. Like I said, for what it is worth. The Land Rover transfer cases have some unique spline oil starvation issues between the input shaft and input gear of the LT230 transfer case, and use a weaker spiral bevel ring and pinion (not hypoid). I doubt it would cause you any problems to run it, but I also doubt you will see any great benefit to doing so either.

I've used Redline's MT-90 in my transfer case for the last couple of years - it's a 75W90 GL-4 gear oil and I would recommend it. It's made for manual gear boxes - but came highly reccomended on this board by the oil gurus -

BTW - I use Amsoil synthetic gear lube (80W-90) in the diffs ...
