Hi all. I called my local Toyota dealer and they agreed to replace my fuel tank and rear seatbelts on my 85 FJ60 under the recall. The Service Manager told me they needed my truck there in order to request the parts and that I could pick it while the parts arrived as it could be a while. I dropped it off last Tuesday and yesterday I called them as I wanted to work on it during the weekend just for them to tell me that they could not give me the truck back as it is a liability due the tank risk and that if I wanted to pick it up they would cancel the order until I bring the truck back. I wasn't very happy about the whole thing but decided to leave the truck there. BTW, they said that they are not 100% sure they will be able to find the parts...

My question to you guys is, if you've had the tank replaced by Toyota, how long has it taken for them to get it?

What a load of BS. They don't need your car sitting in their parking lot while they're waiting for parts.

The dishonesty at that dealership is shocking. I'd go to another dealer... but then again, they're all pirates.

If you do give in to their extortion just because you don't want to hassle with it, once the tank gets fixed, blackball that dealership forever. The service manager can't be trusted.

I can't agree with you more. I've walked out of this place before when looking into buying a new car just for their dishonesty. One time, they would not give me my drivers license and keys back because they wante to close a deal with me. Needless to say, I got very upset and demanded my stuff back and walked out. The only reason I went there is because the replacement is free is very close to my house. I'm not very happy with the whole thing but I need the tank as mine is in pretty bad shape (rusted and leaking).

I could have sworn I heard Toyota ran out of OEM gas tanks a long time ago and this recall is otherwise over. Can someone else chime in on this? Maybe @beno would know?

Doesn't Toyota legally have to honor the recall regardless of how long it has been???

No. The recall is only good for 10 years. So if they can't find the parts, they will just ask me to pick up the car. I have a feeling that is going to be the outcome.

My local dealer told me that they weren't able to get the parts. I thought that was weird because a lot of people on here have got it done after I was told they don't have any more gas tanks.

The parts list and installation instructions can be found here;

Most, but not all seem to still be available.

I had mine replaced, no questions asked from the local dealer on my '88 62, probably 6-7 years ago. They looked up the vin, ordered it, and I dropped it off when it arrived. The guy in the shop also hipped me to ordering from Specter and bringing him the box of new pump, filter etc. and he installed it no charge since he was in there anyway. I do believe per several threads here, that the 62 tanks are NLA.

@Comet were you the one that just had his tank done? You had to finangle it in some funky way right?

I have requested the recall update. The dealership has agreed to do the recall pending parts. That call was near the end of June, no call yet. @Ian Crawford had his done in Kentucky.

Yep, just had mine done in June. Said and done, everything took about a month and a half or two months from the first call to them letting me know they had all of the parts. . I took them new (from Cruiser Parts dot com) sending unit and fuel pickup assy and had them throw those into the new tank (I already had the old one out and those parts were shot).

Oxmoor Toyota in Louisville did mine, if your dealer needs a reference I think the guy in parts was named Brian. It took him awhile but he tracked everything down.

So my journey continues. Steven Toyota in Harrisonburg, VA called me back yesterday (after I left a message in the morning) and the Service Rep Jim said the recall was discontinued and no parts can be ordered. Long story short, he was more than happy to get off the phone with me because each time he said something I had a question already answered. Bought my work car there this year. Shame on me.

Called Haley Toyota in Roanoke, VA. Discussed the situation with the service rep who called me back after checking with the service manager and the parts manager. I'm scheduled for the 30th. Now, how do I MUDShip this beast to Roanoke? Anyone got room in the back of their truck?

Which leads to another concern. U-Haul two wheel dolly with the rear drive shaft disconnected. That works, right?

Best of luck and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Well, I just spoke with Toyota and they said the parts are no longer available. So be careful with towing your car just to hear back later that the part is no longer available.
