Question about fuel tank recall replacement

I don't know if there is a difference between talking to Toyota customer service and who the dealer works with. The guy from Toyota told me that they do not deal with dealers and that he had no idea where the dealer would get the parts from. This is so puzzling and frustrating. My issue is that I don't know whether to pull my truck from the dealer or just leave it there.

Thank you for the update.

More to come as it unfolds. The Prius is a nice car. I would rather eat lead than drive one but still...nice car.

@beno thank you for the discontinued part numbers, that will come in handy. I will buy those parts and leave them in the truck with the pick up and sender.

Update for me too. Haley Toyota in Roanoke VA completed the replacement with no questions asked. When I picked up the Cruiser; however, the service guy who went to get my truck couldn't keep it started. Took him ten minutes to get it to the service bay for pick up. He didn't know about the choke. WTF? I ended up walking around to the back of the building and helping him out. I asked him how he liked driving a piece of history and he said he didn't. I pulled the choke, fired it up, and began to drive away. To add insult to injury, one of the technicians was out back taking a smoke break and when I drove by he said "Man, that's a nice jeep. They sure don't make Jeeps like that anymore." I'm with @beno on dealerships.

In addition to the discontinued hoses previously mentioned by @beno , I'm being told there are 2 other hoses holding it up.

That seems to be a new development. Online parts places are also listing those as discontinued. Regardless, they're just short sections of fuel hose, look at parts #14 and 15 in post #10. I can't imagine that a "cut to fit" solution wouldn't work, just as it does for the other two hoses.

I agree, but it sure seems to be a popular excuse for the dealerships to avoid a job that none of them want to do in the first place...

There are liability reasons for this.

All warranty work has to be done with approved genuine OEM Toyota Parts.

As such, this can hold up the process or they can neglect to do the warranty work.

That said, I would talk with the service manager and tell them that you are willing to waive legal culpability of the dealership if you bring in those hoses for them to replace. And truly bring in decent, quality hoses. Not Autozone specials.

Ideally metric since Toyota doesn’t use SAE hose sizes.

That’s what I would do and see what their response is.

Guys, I ended up getting my tank replaced. I had to talk to the main service Manager in the dealership for them to release my car and not close the case. The guy was very cool and willing to help. They kept me informed of the parts arrival status and took them 4 days to replace everything. You are correct on the hoses that are no longer available but as previously mentioned, they are standard size hoses so they were able to replace them. I'm so glad I got this done as the old tank has some serious rust and I actually had to use JB Weld as a temporary fix.

Very sound advice @beno. I'll have that conversation with the service manager. Any Idea what size fuel hoses those are?

...and this thread is why this community of enthusiasts on Mud are so incredible. The honesty, respect and willingness of each other to help a fellow Cruiser owner is above and beyond.

They are return hoses so not very big or thick. They have some protector on a portion of them.

I would probably assume some metric hose that’s 200-300mm in length cut to fit would work.

I don’t have my 60 anymore so I cannot inspect myself but maybe someone can get those hose measurements for you. Length and ID would be most important.

The hose clamps for those hoses are 8mm diameter when clamped. So the ID will probably be 6 or 7mm would be my intuitive guess.

@beno you are my hero. My hero. Seriously. All kidding and man shaming aside. Thank you for not only providing kick ass parts at a reasonable price but the knowledge (and patience) to deal with the likes of me (and others like me) on a daily basis. It does not go unnoticed. BTW, I will be calling you soon for more parts. I almost have the last load installed. You frieking rock.

I just asked for fuel hose at O'Reiley's.

The hard lines that they go to on the frame (5 and 11 below) measure 8mm OD. 5/16" (7.9mm) ID should work. Eyeballing it, they may be 300mm long. If I were going to provide precut lengths, I'd leave them a little longer than that just in case. A 25' spool of quality fuel line is $20 from Summit.

Thank you @bhk for getting that measurement, and to everyone else that has contributed as well. I will update the threads when I make progress finding a dealer that agrees to do the job.

great thread. very helpful and I can confirm these similar experiences and discontinued parts. Hoping my local dealer will come through in 2021.
