Hey there,

I found a pretty clean looking 05 100 series at a dealership near me. They just got her in with 131k miles and I have a couple quick questions.

First: Apparently the timing belt/water pump service had never been done and water pump was leaking when they bought it; so the dealership just did those services. Is that a red flag in terms of the previous owners not doing the required maintenance in time? Also was doing the timing belt that late possibly damaging to the power train?

Second: The cost seems pretty high at 18500 but it is low miles, and just had the timing belt service done starting out. Also tires and rear brakes just installed and I'm sure they did a basic mechanical check. So I guess what is a fair price with this info? Seems completely stock from pictures.

Anything else I should check before I go out and look at it / should I just say no because of the timing belt being done 40k miles past its time? Is the price way too high / about right?

Thanks!

I wouldn't worry about the timing belt change being late. As long as it never snapped, it's fine. I think 18,5 is 1500.00 too high, personally. I'd shoot for 17K max. That said if it's the right truck for you it's worth a premium. Nice LC examples don't come around often and if it's a nice example the seller is in a stronger position than you.

I wouldn't necessarily call that a low mileage truck, just lower average. Use the Toyota site to get the VIN and plug it in to check the records. Most put off the TB because of the cost. If it had regular service, then it should be fine. Oh, as long as it's rust free. Check the underside and rear hatch, those are prone to rust.

If you really want to make sure it's good, take it for a PPI at @sleeoffroad , he is in Golden and knows 100s inside and out.

Yes I know it's not low miles but that's only about 13000/year which means it got used but not excessively. Most of the trucks I'm looking at are well over 200k and would need a timing belt replacement (2nd time) and they're still asking 10-12k for these.

That's a good call on Slee Off Road - I pass them all the time. It's also a CA / CO truck so I'll check for rust but it should be okay.

I can't seem to find a spot on Toyota to input a vin lookup. I tried to add it to "my cars" but it said it was unavailable. hmm.

The dealer should also give you a free Carfax. Personally, I wouldn't get to focused on service history because even if you find holes in the Carfax it doesn't mean the owner didn't just change the oil themselves or take it to a shop that doesn't report. My boss has I believe a '04 Tundra with 315K miles and he claims he has only done basic maintenance. He hasn't touched the engine other than oil. I don't recommend this, but like I said service history can't tell all. However, it is nice to buy a car that recently had the TB and WP done.

To me it sounds like a solid ride and again like a previous poster said as long as belt didn't break you should be fine. On price of its the right one then it's a good deal. Tomorrow you may find a better deal but as long as your happy you can't focus on that!

Got an 05 two owner with all records just over a month ago for 18,400. It was clean and no rust which is harder to find up here in the rust belt so I jumped on it. If it clean and your ok with the price do it. Everyone has a different idea of what a good deal is. Location also plays a part in price. The timing belt being put off is not a big deal either.

Are you referencing AUS dollars?

I just bought a one owner 04, excellent shape, 113,000 with service records for 18. I waited months and jumped on it the second I saw it.

These trucks are few and far between. This one will go quick, decide fast.

+2... I bought an '06 TLC 100 here in Virginia after looking for two years for just the right one. My dealer took it in on trade and called me first before even listing it. They go VERY fast. Mine was purchased and maintained at another local dealer and was basically a Soccer Mom's Garage Queen. Road rubber with no tow hitch either. While I was looking her over, two others potential buyers spotted it from the road and wanted to inspect. As I arrived first and had it out for inspection/test drive, I had first right of refusal. One of the other buyers tried to make a cash offer to buy it out from under me, but the Sales Manager refused as I had been a long time customer.

Use Kelly Blue Book, Edmunds, NADA or TrueCar to establish ranges and help you to determine whether or not you are getting a good deal. There are way too many variables impacting specific vehicles that will impact price.
Mine needed the TB/WP done and they knocked $1K off the purchase price. I had it done when I took it in for my first major service.
