Hey folks,

I'm trying to sell my truck currently, but it's not exactly going well. My original plan was to liquidate the pickup and later on when money's better get a late-model dodge with the cummins. but . . .

If I can't get rid of the truck, what's y'all's advice on putting a diesel motor into an 84 4x4 pickup. It's currently running a 22R motor. Yes, I did a search, but most of the diesel swap info pertains to 'cruisers (which I WISH I had, but don't). I know there was a diesel option for this year truck, but I'll be buggered if I know where/how to go about finding one, what it might cost and even if it's feasible to do! ADVICE!!

Thanks in advance,
charlie

You could probably drive your truck off a cliff and go buy a used CTD Dodge and still be money ahead. A diesel swap is not cheap, if you can find the engine they put in them. And from what I have read, it's not a very good engine.

Why are you so intent on ripping out the 22R? I hope it's not to try to save money, you'll never get it back.

There's a guy on pirate4x4.com that's swapping a VW TDI engine into a mini-truck, pretty cook project actually. Lots of pitcures, might try to find it.

The 2L and the 2LT were offered in the 80's pickups. They have some head issues, they crack between the valves. They are not very strong, a good running 22re will run around a tuned 2LT. You can buy half cuts of trucks from japan with diesels but they run about 5,000 to start. Your local dealer can't get you parts, not even if you have part numbers, and lots of 2LT parts have been discontinued. Toyota in Canada can get some parts for grey market engines, just ToyotaUSA doesn't bother with the oddball orders from Japan.

I'd stick with the 22R but swap in the E(fuel injection). Or try to get a cheap 3RZ, they have 150hp and feel about as strong as a 3VZ. A 5VZ would be a good engine but would take more fabrication then a 3RZ.

Why do you want a diesel? the 3to4mpg better? The mythical more power?(only talking toyota here).

I'm doing my homework now on some toyota motors for my swap...what model is the 3.4L?
