IMHO .. I've seen more shady dealers than independent mechanics.

Example my dealer oil change I asked if they lubed the drive shafts, and it was written down that they did, but when I went and looked at the dealer when picking it up the drive shaft and grease nipples were all dust. They had not done it. When I pointed it out the agreed they had not done it and then went and lubed them.
Now someone not mechanically inclined would not have even checked, so then you have a vehicle that says "this" but the "this" was not done or not done correctly.

After that I do my own oil changes and lube.

I have a lot of other examples..

Point is .. some dealers are shady and many independents are not.

Point taken, and as another anecdote my rig appeared to never have had the front driveshaft lubed in 100k+ miles of maintenance at the same dealer before I bought it.

But the tech given the job of a head gasket change won’t be one of the low-level guys doing oil changes and driveline lubes. The nature of the work usually means it’ll be the far more experienced people with at least something of a history successfully doing more complex jobs.

As I said, it’s still an unknown. And yes there is a huge difference between a trusted independent over some shady crew running out of an apartment complex shadeport. But the dealer doing this job at least suggests they didn’t try to lowball the job.. the previous owner would pony up when needed. That’s generally a good sign for a rig someone would be looking at buying used.

Yup. Somewhere on here is an entire thread devoted to serious problems with dealer service and I have had several bad experiences with dealer service. So much so I consider the phrase dealer service to be an oxymoron.
