I've tried searching for information on the trailer PTI process in CA but I'm not having a lot of luck.

I have ordered a Malone Microsport XT trailer (I assemble myself). I believe this requires a CA PTI to operate.

1) I get that there is a PTI form. I can printout and fill out. Any reason I shouldn't request a paper title at this time? Not sure why it's not the default.

2) Can I operate the trailer while trying to get the PTI submitted into the DMV - either waiting in line (scheduling time off work) and/or via DMV appointment (4 week wait?).

3) When I go to the DMV to submit the PTI, do I take the trailer? Does this require some sort of inspection and if so, is it done after I submit the PTI application? Before the PTI application? During the PTI application (go to the counter, hand in the application, they inspect the trailer, then issue the PTI?)?

4) Is insurance required for trailers (I will check w/ my insurance agent just wondering what most of you guys do)?

My insurance carrier, Progressive, says my tow vehicle is what covers the trailer and all cargo.
I could be way wrong, but since it's a manufactured trailer (with assembly required) it should include necessary paperwork to register it. The PTI is for homebuilt, "custom" made trailers-at least that's what the DMV told me when I asked about registering my homebuilt trailer.

I don't know about that, I want to say that I have seen PTI steekers on mfg'd trailers, but I could be wrong.

Oddly, the "Permanent" part of a PTI registration isn't so permanent, it just isn't an annual renewal.

If the trailer does not have a VIN stamped in it then you have two options, stamp one yourself or accept the number that the DMV assigns it with a special sticker. If you stamp it yourself it can be a number that is significant to you. Either way the DMV should tell you to stamp the number in a second place where only you know it is.

isnt PTI a 5 year license? I prolly ought to have renewed mine twice already:eek:
