Hello all,

This is my first post as a member, I am longtime lurker.

I am considering buying my dad's stock 1999 LC 100 series. The vehicle has barely more than 70,000 miles and has been a daily driver for him since he bought it in 2003 (with 32,000 miles). Off-roading is not really part of the culture in New Orleans, but I am eager to learn more. The only blemish is the broken antenna motor, but I already found the thread on replacing that.

My only concern is the increased gas costs as I get rid of my 92 Honda Prelude Si (128,500 miles) that gets 28 mpg in the city and 35 mpg highway (which is for sale as of right now.) Any tips on dealing with 14/16 mpg are appreciated.

As for value, I know the mileage is very low for the year, and the KBB private party value is about $14,000. What is a good price for this vehicle? I will probably get a discount because my dad is the seller and he has bought my sisters new cars instead of used ones and he wants to give me a better car now that the Honda is starting to show its age. Any ideas on family dealings and price are welcome too.

Thanks,
GoIrish

Welcome.

You just have to bite the bullet in regards to the gas mileage.

Buying from your father, you will not have any surprises. You know all the maintenance work that has been and hasn't been done. It seems like a great situation.

As above there is no panacea for the mpg of Landcruisers (aside from buying a Prius and averaging your fuel expense ;) ). I paid alot more than $14K 2.5 years ago when I bought my 1-owner '99 with 69K! Mine came from the rust coast and had surface rust on bottom of rig...which made replacement of bolts more challenging. So check the bottom of your rig for rust/corrosion.

Good luck!

Keep the prelude as a DD....or suck it up...

What is a good price for this vehicle?

16 - 17K

99's are unsafe, I'd pass.

Over by these parts, $14k would be a good price. I'd also keep both vehicles. Commute with the Prelude, play with the Cruiser.

Sorry, I was being sarcastic. Hence, the emoticon. Thought you might be following the other thread. Though most of us prefer the newer 100's, the 98-99's are perfectly fine.

I'd not own or drive a 98-99 especially if lifted.

How are 99s unsafe?

There are heated debates every few weeks in this board about the safety aspects of Pre-2000 versus post-2000 (with or without ATRAC). While most think that pre-2000 100s are very safe, but that post-2000 100s are safer because of the added safety features, there are some with the opinion that pre-2000 100s are dangerous.

Shotts is very vocal with that opinion. Most people, though, are of the opinion that while "2000 and beyond" models have added safety, 100s before that are very safe vehicles too.

https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=153992 is an example of what this debate/discussion is typically like.

Hoser, I did not see your post before I posted a link to the same thread.

$14K seems pretty fair for this one. The mileage sucks, nothing to do about that. You should probably do most or all of the 90K items now, given the vehicle's age. Plan for that to run $1-2K depending on how many extra little things you throw in that probably aren't really needed (Mobil 1, plugs, etc.).

This vehicle never flooded, did it? Check my sig line, that would change everything. There are 2 schools of thought on the VSC (MY 2000+): those who think it's useless, and those who have stayed out of a wreck because of it.

if you get enough discount with your dad then you can pay for gas, good luck

IMHO: I think 17 is too high for a 99 - Yes, I am of the school that if a 2000+ can be found at a good deal its worth it - however.
You have the opportunity to get a vehicle with a known history - I would go for the 99. I do not have any faith in KBB - try NADA or a credit union and get a fair price for both of you. For 14, there would be no hesitation - suck up the bad mileage. If you want to be totally fair with the family deal - get a value report from a company such as Mitchell or ADP/Autosource and buy it. Best of Luck

If your Dad is as anal as mine and took care of it on the exterior/interior too you have another benefit of a clean rig that should also run good.
