1. Thank God for hand throttles that work.

My throttle cable snapped on the big pass right before going down into Globe. I usually have everything I could possibly need to make a repair on the road, and in fact had a brand new one sitting on the shelf at home. I managed to limp into the Chevron station with the hand throttle, where I parked and then called Tim Hill. He said, if necessary he could bring one to Globe for me, but suggested I call Dave Gore.

I called Dave, and he said he had one, but was in Phoenix and wouldn't be back into Globe for at least 3 hours. He suggested I go by Manzel's shop and see if he had one or could figure out something.

Manzel didn't have one, but went to his trash bin and said he had something that might work. It not only worked, but got me to Payson and beyond, plus a whole week of offroad hunting, and then back to Tucson. Check out the pic. The piece of cable that he used to splice was from a late model windshield wiper assembly.

Glad to hear you are back on the road. Is your hand throttle a home brew? The factory toyo hand throttle on the 60 i pulled apart just hooked to the gas pedal and would not have saved you in this situation. Maybe I'll re-consider a different design. :hhmm:

your throttle cable probably broke from constant rubbing on the sharp edges of that linkage set-up you have there.

try something like this, it sits in the larger hole above you current location. it also allows for movement/pivot while your throttle arm articulates

That is the stock hand throttle on the 40. It is the cable on the top part of the picture. I am running a Holley carb, and it hooked right up. The manual choke also hooked right up to the carb, but is out of the picture.

Looks good. Where would you pick up something like that?

how did the hunting go?

Thanks.

Just purchased it. I may have to move the hand throttle cable down to where the throttle cable is currently, depending on the back clearance, but that shouldn't be a problem.

and, no elk, but a mental renewal camping alone in the wilderness for 8 days. Just for grins, I called some turkeys almost into camp twice.

I know it's a little late now, but Ace Hardware used to carry most all of the various fittings and ends for all sizes of cables. I have made up complete replacement throttle cables for both my 40 and 55. I went with the biggest size cable that would fit smoothly thru the cable housing, and I have never had one even fray, let alone fail. John

OMG. I just installed it. It puts the throttle cable much higher on the cam. Much quicker response, better acceleration, and more throttle.

I took it for a test drive, and when getting on to the freeway, I looked down and was going 76mph (that is on a GPS tuned speedo) and still accelerating. I didn't realize what I was missing.
