Gary, maybe this was already asked but I'm curious. How does registration work when making a vehicle like yours?

New to the board. I've really enjoyed all the projects on here. This one is really nice. Makes me want an FJ.

Unfortunatly, the later of the 2 parts is the year model, so its a 96 legally. The good part is that its the only one I have a title to.

Maybe in Texas but here in CO that only applies to emissions. Here what your doing would require a few more hoops and an assigned Vin number would be established. The process is quite draining also and the final hoop and also the one who actually installs a new vin plate is the State Patrol. Basically they go over the whole vehicle with their guide book in hand and depending on their mood at the time you will pass or fail. Hope you don't get to find out what I'm talking about!

In Texas it is the frame of the vehicle that carries the VIN and the title........I have towed vehicles away from a bunch of chop shops and work with DOT on these a lot.

I am not sure if I want to go through that although I will eventually title and register in Colorado. You may have to fill me in on CO law some day regarding registration issues.
Gary

I swear they make it up as they go! The issue I cannot see how you can avoid is the "consumer Vin number." That is the one that was on the 80's dash at the bottom of the drivers side windsheild. The 45 don't have one because it's old but your title will state it's a 96 FZJ-80 which did have one. I am eager to hear your titling story when in Moab!

Gary, did you keep the VIN plate off the front dash by the defroster vent? Even if you didn't, the frame VIN and the matching title will stand as the defacto VIN. According to my NADA Vehicle titling book, the Texas VIN and title is what Colorado will go by to issue a Colorado title and license plates.

Once that baby has a plate hanging off of it he is golden.

Yep, it looks like all you have to do is complete a Colorado Form DR 2395 and have the frame VIN inspected by a local public safety officer. With those docs you can title it in Colorado. And if you register it in an emissions' county you'll have to deal with an emissions inspection. But if you have existing Texas title and tags that match the frame VIN, you are set. Again, it would be nice if you had that VIN plate mounted where it can be seen, but I don't think that's a deal breaker as long as Buford T. Justice can see the frame VIN. You definitely want to maintain it to be a 1996 and nothing else....no reference to the FJ-45 in the titling process.

After what I recently went through after we built my daughters car, if this works as easy as Jim suggests I'm getting a Texas PO Box! Wishing you all the great karma possible! Getrdone!

I think if you are Colorado domicile and approaching the VIN Police from scratch, you are in for a fight like you say. But with Texas docs in hand, it would seem hard for them to create much grief. You can use my PO Box anytime. :grinpimp:

Heck just send it up here to South Dakota; they will title anything. I was out driving this past weekend and saw a Camaro with 33" M/T's  .
I'll pay the 30 bucks to tiltle it, work the bugs out of the rig and give it back to you in Moab :D

but seriously what a great build up, I can't wait to check it out in Moab.
best of luck

there is a DeLorean down in Austin, Tx that is running 35's...looks pretty funny

I have the dash mounted vin tag and it won't be an issue getting the Texas title. From there I have done the Colorado title deal in Crested Butte, where the Marshal came out looked around it and signed off within miutes I had tags and title reciept. Gunnison Co. is a no emessions Co, so its pretty easy to get it done there.

Hell I took a FJ-60 title up to the DOT here in TX and I have registration and a title for this......my FJ-60
