Project: Trailer Overhaul

It was dry and seasonably cold (which it hasn't been all winter)!

I didn't really get into hard-core calculations for the tongue extension, my main goal was to allow the trailer to jacknife completely (perpendicular to the back of the Cruiser) without the trailer tub contacting the rear corners of the Cruiser body, like it had done in the past on tight trails. I wanted to accomplish this while allowing a cooler mount to go in front of the tub, too.

Worked out really well, the trailer is well-balanced, still tilts backward to sit on its "ass" easily, and tracks really well behind the Cruiser. I can't complain!

Ohhhhh! Green! Almost as good as RED.

Nice work Mr. Exiled, nice work.

Today was a *long* day. Wetsanding was a *bitch*, I am definitely not going to get into bodywork as a profession! Finished up the paint today, looks pretty good. Had some blemishes here and there, but overall, not bad for a utilitarian trailer and a shoestring budget. Here's a shot of it parked outside, the lid still taped up but you can see the new color and the rims painted to match the Cruiser's:

I really like the green, it matches pretty closely and looks good with the grey lining inside:

At first I didn't know how the white lid would look (I was too lazy to take it apart and paint it, plus I need a couple of strong friends to help me and none were around last weekend), but it's got kind of a neat FJ40 or D90 sort of feel to it, I like it! Besides, that should keep the interior temps from getting too hot. You'll notice I added a handle to the lid to make it easier to open with one hand.

So there it is, folks, I didn't have time to button up the tailgate hardware and the light brackets because I used a different paint and it took forever to dry. Next weekend I'll get into the electricals and if my water tank gets here on time, I'll start working on that.
almost done.webp

Beautiful!

very cool

Actually, I could use your help putting the roof rack on sometime next weekend? It's time to see how it impacts the mileage on the beast after the swap, plus I want to get ready for the Roundup!

Beer + food on me, shouldn't take longer than a half hour!

THANKS!

Nice work HC, is that by chance a Polar Beer bottle opener on the rear???;)

Is that the same tent I carried to Moab for you??? Thought it had a yellow cover. At any rate it looks great, can I drop mine off for some work. :)

Give a shout if you come to CO this summer, we are getting all geared up for some serious camping and touring and would love to see you...

Exiled,
did you fab the cover for your trailer? could I see more detailed pics of the top please? I have a 1946 Bantam post WWll Civilian 1/4 ton trailer that I want to add a top to so I can put a tent on it like yours.

Color looks great. I would love to see photos of the water tank as I am trying to source one for the underside as well. Any info you have on the tanks would be great. Thanks. And again, really nice build.
