Hi, guys, I put another 10 hours into the '74 FJ40 cruiser today, And yes, I took plenty of step by step pics. that I will post in a build thread. Between yesterday and today, I removed stock drum brake assemblys all the way to clean knuckles on both sides, Removed driveshaft and third member, PO welded it solid to housing, (so you would have thought,) Completely RE-assembled old units to be saved for a stocker rebuild, Completely Disassembled new BJ60 units for cleanig, Checked lash and pinion on R&P, Removed carrier and ring, and cleaned for ARB install, Took birfs apart, tried 'ol drop in the pipe trick on rt. side (the axle and pipe just laughed at me) Put axle in vice real tight, smacked the S**t out of it with drift and BFH and finally sheared circlip, Tried pipe trick on drivers side (the long one, and popped out first time because of the added weight). I don't know what paint thinner (solvent) costs other areas, but here it is $7.20 a gallon plus tax WTF !!!!
BUT, well worth it, kerosene and Diesel smell so bad. tomorrow I will install ARB (hopefully) and clean and paint diff. housing. Oh yes, one top knuckle bearing race was so bad it had grooves worn in it. I woul;d have been hesitant to tear into this , if not for all your great advice and help. Thankyou Randall PS, I am installing an advance adapters saginaw conversion at the same time.
