I was able to program a new FOB that I got from Amazon, along with a key that was cut at Toyota, and a holder from YotaMD. On a 2000 Land Cruiser.

The remote works fine in that it can lock and unlock the doors now. BUT, although the key fits the door lock, and ignition, it won't start the vehicle. It cranks, but no start. Put in the original key, it starts right up.

What's going on here? Anybody experience something similar?

There are 2 parts to programming a key for our vehicles.

1) the “fob” buttons to lock/unlock the doors. (which you seem to have done)

2) the immobilizer/RFID chip, to start the car (which you don’t appear to have done)

Or just get techstream 🤷🏻‍♂️
By “just get techstream” do you mean: Purchase the $40 VCI adapter (32/64 bit?), wait for the Chinese ePacket to arrive, download the software, install the virtual environment & drivers, plug into car, realize it’s not working, wade through 10’s of threads about “Techstream help/not working”, finally get it talking to the truck only to realize after wading through the cryptic UI that the only thing you can likely do on a 2000 LC, besides add a key, is honk the horn. And surprise! It’s reset your trip odometers. So much for tracking your next oil change...

Or, you can do the three minute pedal dance.😀

If I was tuning AHC on a newer LX then sure, Techstream is the cat’s pajamas. On his 2000 LC, not so much.

Nope. Sounds like you got the wrong stuff. My techstream does practically everything.

@musthave I can help you with my copy of Techstream. I'm in the Orlando area.

I have techstream and it works fine. Not sure where to program keys, I am getting ready to connect it up now.

Interesting. What features can you tweak besides security or key pairing?

There are just a few on the 98. Auto away steering wheel, auto locks, double click to lock/unlock. Also great for diagnostics, brake bleeding, checking ahc pressures, reading codes for ABS, and quite a few other things. It has been one of the best tools I have bought for my 1998+ Toyota vehicles.

Under the immobiliser ecu

Thank you. So I went to the immobiser ecu section. New key. Says to insert master key turn to on, did that, no problem. It then says to take the master key out, put the new key in within 20 seconds. But then says it lost communication, start back from square 1. Tried several times.

How do I keep it connected when changing keys???

I tried the dance a few times, no luck. I did everything within the seconds allocated. But I didn't wait until specified seconds were up.

I basically did this:

Simultaneously depress and release brake and accelerator pedals 1 time.
Insert your existing master key into the ignition. Do Not Turn!
I Immediately did depress and release accelerator pedal 5 times
I then immediately depress and release the brake pedal 6 times and remove key.
I then inserted the new key immediately.
I then immediately depress and release the accelerator pedal 1 time
This never happened - After 80 seconds new key is registered and security light goes off.
This never happened - Remove new key and depress and release brake pedal 1 time.

Do you need to wait the 15 seconds, 20 seconds, etc.? The whole thing took me maybe 30 seconds.

Not sure. I had that happen on a GX I was adding keys to about a month ago, but I just plugged the adapter into a different usb port and it worked fine.

If I remember correctly, the system only allows for a limited number of keys to be added and once this limit has been reached, some keys must be deleted before more can be added.
The procedure is listed somewhere on this web site but I don't have time at the momeny to dig it up

I have tried every "pedal dance" method I could find to delete keys on my 98 and nothing ever works. I have only been successful deleting keys using Techstream.

When I did the pedal/lock button dance to enable my key fobs I think I found that the driver’s door needed to be closed, which was not explicitly said in the instructions. Maybe dance again with the door closed?

There is a bit of art to it, admittedly. You need to be quick with the key swap and hitting "ok" in Techstream, whatever that sequence is.
