Greetings,

I´m a newbie on here as i´ve just bought a 1997 fj80 4.2TD.

I would appreciate some advice as i´ve a few issues i need to resolve. Firstly, the performance is very poor. Ive just taken the car for a service and the shop fiddled with the engine as they said the emmissions were too high!! As a result of their tinkering, the performance now is s***e! How can i make some adjustments to correc this and improve the performance??

What else can be done to improve this also?

The second issue i have is with ride height. I bought the vehicle for remote solar power installations, which invariably involve carrying 500kgs of batteries over bad terrain, so i need to raise the height a bit. What is the cheapest and easiest way of acheiving this?

Thanks for any help in advance,

Scot

I'm very new and don't know about your performance. But for the lift/suspention I think Slee off road is the place to talk with about OME kits. Just my 2c worth.

Hi, welcome, a suggestion is to post this thread in the International Tech Section as well as here as most people here are less familiar with the turbo diesels which is what you have if I read right. As far as the load carrying and ride handling and such, the one and only answer I know of is to get the Old Man Emu (OME, not OEM) heavy duty suspension in whatever lift amount you want. I have about 2.5 inch lift and mine is the medium duty suspension. The OME system is perfect; not only does it significantly increase load carrying in the right configuration, it also makes the vehicle handle much much much better than stock. As mentioned, get your stuff from Slee Offroad if at all possible (303-278-8287 if my memory is correct), they provide excellent advice and excellent service. Good luck with all of this and the solar setups, that sounds cool!

Thanks for your help guys, i´ll take a look at OME´s website. is it a bigger spring system? if so, will it work with standard dampers, or do i need new ones?

By the way, the car is with me in (not so sunny) Spain!! cloudy as hell at the moment!!

I think it will work with standard shocks, or dampers, but really the OME shocks are not so expensive as to stay out of reach and if you do want a little lift, I do not think the stock dampers will work well as they will be the travel limiters. I do not mean to sound like an expert on this stuff though, cause I'm not, but, again, call Slee and they will answer any and all questions very graciously to help you get the perfect setup for YOU. They are all absolutely terrific people as well as terrifically knowledgable about these rigs (not cars agghhemm :D ). Again welcome to the forum!

Yes Turbo would be correct, PLEASE don't refer to it as a car........... :flipoff2:

Oh and most of us here are jealous of a Turbo Diesel.....................

Depending on the lift, stock dampeners will NOT work with OME lifts, as the overall length of the shock will not be sufficent to span the gap between the mounting positions, and if you run the shock at full extension all the time the life span will decrease dramatically. Just get new ones.

It sounds to me the shop you took it do didn't know what they were doing. You need to take it to someone who knows these vehicles. Either a shop that specializes or the dealer is always a safe bet. I am assuming they have Toyota dealers in spain.

Welcome

Yeah, they have toyota dealers, but ive been to two, and neither of them were familiar with this model. I am sure it was never imported over here. HELP!!

I have a 1HD-T and amazingly the performance was dramatically improved by taking the slack out of the accelerator cable and adjusting the throttle or kick down cable to the transmission, the improvement was unbelievable but may be if your emissions were up that they just screwed down the pump to make it deliver less fuel. The 1HD-T and its later derivatives 1HD-FT, 1HD-FTE are known to be set up as standard with very week settings. Rather than go to a Toyota Garage I would go to a place that specialises in fuel injection, they can assess your pump and injectors and recalibrate the pump and change any injector nozzles as necessary. They will most probably be a lot cheaper than any main dealer.

Sounds a more sensible thing to do. I´ll check the cables for slackness though, thanks for that. where can i find the fueling screw so that i can tweak it a little bit until i have time to drop into an injection specialist?

Oh, the engine is a 1HD-FT

Scot,

If you are looking for an expert on your vehicle give Maarten Verschure from All American Imports a call or e-mail him at maarten@all-american.nl. I believe he is in Holland.
