Spring is just around the corner and would like to take my son to go camping when it gets a little warm. I was thinking that if we have to go camping, it will be a primitive style of camping which does not have the amenities and luxuries of hot shower, swimming pools, etc etc.. which is being offered by other campsites in OBX.

So with that said, where in OBX that I can find a primitive campsites where I can or allowed to pitch in a tent and at the same time park next to my Cruiser? What I'm looking for is a serenity of the surrounding, away from the crowds, and of course safety and security of the sites. Camping will be for a day or two, to just get away from it all:grinpimp: and enjoy the nature, outdoors, and the ocean which the Mighty Creator created for us to roam.

Yes, I googled and yahooed it but did not yield the information that I'm looking for. Any of you guys point me to the right sites.

Thanks in advance. Wanna go camping???

There is a site for tents close to oregon inlet, but I would say it sucks. I'm not really looking to camp down in OBX for the reason of water moccasins. From what I hear there a lots of them down there. There in the dunes too. Maybe it would be better down to the southern islands. The main place of the snake is in the wildlife refuge.

Water moccasins or cottonmouths are freaking dangerous. That would be really sucks to camp around their turf. So you think the southern islands are safe?

You want primitive camping AND primitive driving? Check out Portsmouth Island south of Ocracoke. $75 ferry fee, take your own gas. Park wherever you want, camp wherever you want...

Now, that sounds more like what I'm looking for. This is like ala expedition type wheeling/camping similar to western frontiers. I'm going to check it out. Thanks for the tip:beer:.

I've heard it's worth it. We (ONSC) had debated on whether or not doing our OBX trip there. Good thing is, Portsmouth is hard to get to, and doesn't have the consent decree on migrating bird populations (and extreme tourist , like Hatteras Island. But, I've heard it's like Chincoteague, bring the bug spray in the late spring...

I used to live down there, spring can be pretty brutal. Take note of wind speed and direction before setting off. There are government campgrounds (4) along the coast in addition to all the private ones. Oregon Inlet, Buxton(Cape Point), Frisco (airfield), and Ocracoke. They all provide cold water showers and basic toilets(water flushing) and fairly private camping. They do not open for the season until Memorial Day I believe, and are on a first come first serve basis expect Ocracoke, which is only accessable by ferry(free). Like Garner said, Porthsmouth Island is the last frontier, take everything you need, as they don't even have drinking water. If I remember correctly they are private ferry's that have to be reserved in advance. Again, you will have to be tough as nails to use one of the cold water showers in the spring. Hope this helps.

Sounds sweet to me! I don't wanna think about cold showers right now, its 19 outside .....

Try Cape Lookout National seashore. You will need to charter a private ferry to get on the island. Morris marina and cabin camps in Davis, NC runs the ferry service. You can cruise the beaaches and back roads till your heart's content. Absolutely beautiful.

How much do you think it will cost me to charter a private ferry run? Thanks for the tip though.

Good thing I just place another order for a jerry can and nozzle.

Driving off road far away from everything sounds like a lot of fun. Wheeling, camping, cooking, hanging out, I'm definitely in as long as i dont have to work!

Well then, let's do it! Set aside a schedule that will be away from your work so you can have fun:D.
