Has anyone had any experience with priming and painting a galvinized surface?

Thanks Dave

Sand all the shine of the gal with a reasonably coarse sand paper. I use 120 grit dry lube paper. This will also give a good surface for the paint to key into. Then clean with wax and grease remover and give the area a coat of etch primer.
Anyway thats how i do it.

Vinegar will etch the surface and will prepare it for primer.
Also there's a Polyclutch solution for industrial purposes, but not sure about today's tech since last time we used this was about 18 years ago. But vinegar will fo the work.

We used a weak solution of muriatic acid, the same idea as vinegar, just be sure to flush the surface with clean water after you etch it.

I've had LOTS of experience treating and painting galvanized metals .. most of it BAD. As a kid I painted many miles of galvanized rain gutters while painting trim etc on houses. Tried various treatments before painting (after the pain of scraping the old paint down) ... none of them seemed to work all that well despite the homeowners purchasing lots of fancy pre-treatments to make the job last. When I toured around the neighborhoods that I had worked in the following summer a lot of my "work" was already starting to flake after one year. My advice is to go to this link

and then decide what finish paint you will use and ask the manfacturer what they recommend.

Personally I would not sand the surface as that will remove too much zinc which is why you are using galvanized to begin with. I don't know about muriatic acid - I suppose in mild form it may be ok but for sure it removes zinc as well which is why we used to use concentrated muriatic acid to prep galvanized surfaces prior to soldering them. I have used diluted vinegar with some success BUT still I would ask your paint mfr what they recommend as the first option.

good luck

ps .. my house has aluminum rain gutters - much much better!!

A lot of your major paint manfactures..ie PPG, SW, ICI make a rust inhibitive galvanized primer that would put directly over that kind of surface without sanding or anything..If there is a PPG store nearby ask for it and they should have it..

Contact CCOTs they say their body panels are zinc coated they could tell you the best way to prep for prime and what prime to use.

a product called clean n' etch will work. IMHO, the key to galvanization is the "oil" that is in it. On a galvanized grain bin, I don't even think about painting it until it is weathered down..

I have used alot of primers for this, and don't trust any of them. Maybe XIM might work. It is a modified acrylic. But again, make sure you etch it first.

Moeller Marine Products makes Zinc Chromate Primer, designed for superior bonding to aluminum and galvanized steel. I have not used the product but just picked up a few cans to prime my aluminum roof rack so I'll find out soon.
