I bought my leftover '16 in May for $73,999 with 36 miles on it. To be fair it was in a very rural market in Hanford, CA and they just wanted it gone. Lots of the salesmen commented to me about how they were amazed someone was finally buying "The Unicorn".

ETA:

And they threw in all weather mats and cargo tray and a new battery since it'd been sitting on the showroom floor since 8/16.

First use on VIN shows september 29, 2016. Does that mean the warranty started a year ago?

I'm waiting for an '18 in metallic grey with terra. Today the salesman said he could get me one by the end of October for $77,672 out the door. Said they are starting a run for US delivery which will take 2 weeks, plus 2 weeks on the ship and 2 weeks to get to the local dealer.

72k isn't much less than that, for 8,500 unknowable miles and a year of the 2 year warranty. You might think about getting them to throw in some extended warranty to sweeten the deal.

I haven't tried to negotiate against their opening bid, has anyone done better?

Idk, but if the 18's will start coming in next month, I have even higher hopes for a deal in this one

Doesn't show. JTMCY7AJ9H4048655

Google search with the VIN shows they're asking almost $79k, so if they've quoted you $72k that's already a huge discount over their ask. Sounds like you're setting yourself up for long negotiations and games if you're going to come in another $7k lower with your offer. I'd figure out what you ideally want to pay and make them 1 solid, fair offer then walk away unless you like haggling with dealers.

What exactly does out the door mean in your context? Truck plus fees and taxes? Truck after discounts before fees and taxes? Everything except taxes?

The 2018 MSRP is $84,960 ($83,665 plus $1,295 in "Delivery and Processing"), to which I would add about $2,800 in state taxes and registration for a grand total of $87,760.

The salesman at Dealership One said the best price they could give me was $78,667 "plus fees" (not $77,672 as I wrote previously), which is $6,293 under MSRP.

That discount is about what the True Cars and Costco programs say they can get. Edmunds.com does not have the dealer invoice or a "TMV" for the '18 available yet.

So, for this salesman "fees" are Tax, Title and License ("TT&L") and Dealer One's true "Out the Door" price is $81,467.00 (without floor mats or any other accessories).

Should this be a new thread?

I don't mind if you post in here if we are both getting answers. They are similar questions, one answer could help both of us.

That sounds like a good deal. I bought my '17 in March for $79,500. I wanted Silver and all I could find was black and white. Austin and Boerne dealers showed Silver '17s on their website, but when I called they said they were being driven by owner, manager, owner's wife, etc. I called Tegeler in Brenham as I've heard good things about them and they said they would order me one and sell it to me at their cost plus $1,250. That came to about $79,500 before TT&L. I called Fred Haas in Houston as they showed 2 silver '17s on their lot and I told them I would give them $79,500 for one and they said okay, so I ended up buying from them.

That's good information, thanks!

MSRP/invoice on the '17 was about $1,000 higher than the '18 because the rear DVD wasn't optional, so this gives me some perspective.

Put a deposit on an '18 to be built 9/18/17 with my choice of livery and it should be delivered late October. With remote start and all weather mats the final price was $79,162 + TT&L. 2017 and 2016 LCs still on lots should get cheaper once 18s hit the showroom in late September early October.

What's your tax rate there? Ours is 7.65% which would be ~$6,400, and registration would be another ~$2,000 on top of that. if you can get tax, title, and registration for $2,800 that's an incredible deal.

We're at 3% on vehicles, as far as I know.

Double check on that before you drop $80k, because the tax plus the registration costs could be a huge sticker shock. As you mentioned before, the "out the door" price wasn't truly out the door, and on a vehicle this expensive those other costs can be very material.

I'd be surprised if there were any taxes or fees beyond the normal 3% excise tax on the price, $62 registration and $5 for title. The company has purchased 2 other vehicles this year and that was what was paid on both of those.

On $79,162 the total should be about $2,450, which is under the $2,800 the salesman guesstimated.

The legislature tried to raise he excise tax to 4% but it didn't pass. In NM the municipalities aren't tacking on extra taxes (yet) like they do in Colorado where the state excise tax is 2.9 on vehicles but in Denver I think you pay 7.65% after including 4.75 for the municipality.
