The above article was a good read. For my application this is a great quote.

"Best solution with aftermarket coolants: Do a complete coolant exchange, and replace the Japanese OE coolant-conventional or extended-life -with conventional American or G-05."

For those that don't take the time to read RavenTai's excellent link, here are some salient points that I got from the article.

* Japanese vehicles. Toyota research indicates the new extended-life coolant contains phosphates to protect the water pump, and DexCool contains no phosphate. ... both carmakers [Toyota & Honda] exclude DexCool.

* Best solution with aftermarket coolants: Do a complete coolant exchange, and replace the Japanese OE coolant, conventional or extended-life, with conventional American or G-05.

* Never before has the capability to do a complete coolant exchange been more important. If you're making a change in coolant type, such as any Japanese coolant to American green or G-05, you should get at least 90% of the old stuff out.

* Whatever the coolant, remember the other half of the mixture is water. In hard water areas, always use de-mineralized water. Some coolant formulas are more tolerant of hard water than others, but that doesn't mean it's good for them.

The other bit that should be of interest to folks running brass radiators is the assertion that the Toyota coolant dosen't do well at protecting from corrosion high lead soldered brass radiators.

is the early radiator soldered or brazed? is it copper or brass? never have seen one myself

Brass.

you can't make serious stuff out of copper, way too soft. Brass much better to work with.

I have seen copper radiators, or at least the fins were copper, the tanks were ushialy brass not sure about the cores
