SO I ordered a powertrax Lockright for $450 from MAF then found a lockright for $288 and ordered that one planning on sending back the MAF. When they arrived I found out that one lock right is not necessarily the same as the next lockright. The $450 locker is much more complex and has more and different parts than the $288 version made by Richmond gear.

Do I want to install the $450 version or the $288 version? How do they perform differently? Tell me more....

What is the Powertrax part number of the one MAF sent you? A regular LockRight is a PT1630 (30 spline) and a PT 1631 (10 spline)...

They are both made by richmond gear. The power-trax is much more refined than the lockright.

My Powertrax no-slip by Richmond Gear cost $290 from 4x4Tellico 3 months ago. THats the one you want. the 450 from MAF is a rip.

I think you guys are confusing the Power Trax "No-Slip" and the regular Lock Right. The No Slip has some additional "stuff" designed to make it more on-road friendly. It is newer-- the old lockrights have been around for a longer time.

The 450 dollar locker from Man-a-fre is the No-Slip. They also sell the regular lockright for around 300. I am not sure if the difference is worth it-- or what that difference actually is. Maybe someone else knows for sure.

There are also other companies selling copies of the original-- for even cheaper

Excellent.. There are definitely extra "doodads" on the $450 version. Does anyone know if those doodads are worth it? I've attempted to attach photos...

Yes, its worth it.

Here powertrax's web site on the lockright

http://www.powertrax.com/lockright.html

Here is their website on the no-slip (although they appear to be calling it something different these days-- the POWERTRAX TRACTION SYSTEM is what they appear to call it now)

http://www.powertrax.com/noslip.html

The website says that the no-slip includes "A precise synchronization mechanism eliminates the ratcheting sounds typical of other locking differentials. Special gear and spring design reduce the backlash and therefore driveline windup."

It also says "Although smoother than other competitive locking differentials, the brute force characteristics of the POWERTRAX LOCK-RIGHT Locker limit general application in less tolerant and more mainstream applications. In some vehicles, you will hear a light clicking noise as the gears are overrunning themselves and allowing the wheels to differentiate in a turn. This is normal of most lockers on the market today. We recommend the LOCK-RIGHT for vehicles that are primarily driven in severe driving conditions or are used for recreational off-road. For vehicles that are driven daily or require more mainstream application, the POWERTRAX TRACTION SYSTEMS offer a quieter and smoother performance. Please see the POWERTRAX® TRACTION SYSTEMS page."

Again- what they are calling the "Powertrax traction system" appears to be what is also called the "no slip"

JohnL-- I did not mean to imply that you were the one that was confused-- although I must say that 290 is cheaper than I have ever seen a no-slip. Those have always seemed to be around 400 at a minimum, at least for the landcruiser version

I run the one you are showing on the left. It is the standard lock-right. Absolutely worth it. Tough as nails and works awesome. Woody said it best when he said "it just takes some adjustments in driving style". Most of the time you don't even know it is there.

I don't have an opinion on the other as I have been totally satisfied with the original lock-right.

I've been running the original for six years of very hard use. Unless you're rolling in dough, or positive that newer is better(with or without any other data) there is no real need to buy the fancy shmancy unit. They clack a little in the parking lot, but those who know, will recognise the sound and give you a thumbs up. Them that don't like it you can give a :flipoff2:
The Heep guys ain't gonna like you anyway and a lockright clack will rub their noses in it :D

Jared,
sorry, my response came out more terse than I had intended.

Yes, I got my no-slip = "Powertrax traction system" from 4x4 about 2 months ago for ~290 and installed it - extra dodads and all - myself.

450 is too much...see if 4x4 will come down and if not, call MAF and see if they'll match the price if you do indeed want the "no-slip." I cannot, however, say whether the no-slip is worth the difference as I have no experience with the straight "Lock-rite."

best,
john

Alright, thanks everyone! I am gonna stick with the old faithful Lock-right and save myself some dough. Thanks for all your advice and input. I'll let you know how the install goes.

Notso fast...

Sounds like you have decided, but I have run both in my 40.

PowerTrax Lock-Right runs about $250 works great, easy install (1 hour). A little noisey, will chirp and pop around corners under throttle and has a tendancy to make short wheel base vehicles jump lanes when you are on and off the gas at freeway speeds.

PowerTrax No-Slip runs around $425 also works great, same easy one hour instal. No noise, much improved road manners. Will chirp on corners if you give it throttle, but it wont jump lanes... feels almost open.

To me, the extra $150 was well worth it. Depends on how much driving you do on the road.
