thought this old technology was kinda cool.

anybody try this on a cruiser?

Not sure how you would go about doing it on a Land Cruiser. You may be able to hook up to the tail shaft of the transmission and use it in high range. But I would think it would be most useful in low range. I doubt the rear drive off the PTO would match the same gearing as the low range. Seems I remember the M151 having a axle that a second axle could be added. This would be pretty easy to set but I'm afraid the Land Cruiser wouldn't.:meh:

The 3rd member was designed to be used as a front or rear diff, thus a forward and rearward facing input. There is a company that builds a dual axle rear M151 they call the "stumpjumper"

You could do something like this with 2-1/2ton military rear axles... or front 5ton.

I think that's the company I found on the net while searching for parts for my military trailers. Makes sense about the front and rear diff. I just remember a U-joint front and back. I think the 2 1/2 ton axles might be just a little heavy for a FJ40:rolleyes:

Too bad you couldn't saved more of the 1/4 trailers out of Japan. I know more than a of few early Land Cruiser owners would love to have a trailer made in Japan behind their Cruiser:cheers:
 
Rover built a setup for the British military. After testing they did not like it. The driving took too much thought and experience. Among other things it tended to push the towing rig over on it's side when crossed up and powering through. Not ideal for raw recruits.

You could something like this with the rear mount PTO unit that was used in the Cruiser Fire trucks. But it is always in high range.

I have considered a similar approach powered off the back side flange of the rear Rockwell under my project stuck in perpetual limbo. IF it ever gets finished.

Somewhere in my stacks of VW mags and books is a photo of a VW beetle used by some search and rescue. They used a trailer w/ a bettle engine and tranny to ad power/traction. Used a remote start and a flexplate autostick tranny, so it was a whole seperate drivetrain.
