My power steering pump made a terrible noise and died.

I would like to know if it is possible to have a belt that runs from the alternator to the engine pulley. And is there any danger to doing this.

If I can do this what length belt do I need?

Hopefully I can save enough money to get a new pump soon, for now this will have to do.

Thanks for your help,
Patrick

Are you sure this is the PS pump and not the smog pump?
You can run the AC belt around the water pump, the alternator and the crank for as long as you need. This leaves out both the smog pump and the PS pump.

D'animal,
How long does the rebuild take for someone who is a novice?
The earliest I coud get the kit would be sat. or sun.
In the mean time do I need to get the belt off the power steering pump?

It is literally replacing a bunch of "O" rings. The springs on the wipers can give a fit. Make sure you put the wipers in the same way you took them out.

Before you order the kit, grab you pulley and move it horizontally (side to side). If it wiggles a lot then your front bearing is gone and you will need a rebuilt pump. The bearing wearing out is due to overtightening of the belt over a prolonged period of time.

The first one I did, once clean and on the bench, took 45 minutes, the second one was 35 minutes and the third one was about 20 minutes. You will have a two crazy small "O" rings left over.

D'animal,
Thanks for the quick reply. I'm going to try and get it done this weekend. I called Cruiserdan and will oreder the parts when I hear from him. Is there a resource on-line or else where that has a description of talking off the pump and rebuilding it?

Winston,
I remeber seeing one belt that ran from the lower engine pully p to the alternator then to the PSP. I have and 86 fj60 with a 2F engine.
Could you please give more explination Thanks.

Check for the loose shaft first before you order anything.

getting to the pump can be a pain if your rig is still smog compliant. If it is just take pictures of everything before you remove your hoses. You will have you airfilter assembly loose and out of the way for this.

You have one bolt on the bottom of the pump in the front and one in the back. The back bolt is right next to the exhaust manifold. Tight fit.
14mm I think.

You have your tensioner and two top bolts. 12mm I think.

Take the pulley off before you remove the pump. A pickle fork or a set of prybars work well after you take the nut off. Don't get abusive, you may bend the shaft.

When you have it all back together remember to use tranny fluid and not power steering fluid. It will say this on your reservoir.

Oh and it is normal for the bottom of the reservoir to be oval shaped. You will see what I mean.

Do you have A/C?
There is a skinny belt that goes from the A/C to the crankshaft. Take this off and put it on the crank, water pump, and alternator. You will have to remove 2 belts -
One from the smog pump/crank/water pump
One from the PS pump/alt/crank

I have never found that rebuilt Land Cruiser power steering pumps last very long. I strongly advise that you bite the bullet and buy one from Toyota. You will save a lot of time and money in the long run.

Agree 100%.

if you consider a year to be a long enough time, then more power to you. I do not. Especially on a vehicle I have owned for 22 year and plan on owning another 22 years, if I live that long.

I would like to add that the joy of driving a land cruiser with a good new reliable power steering pump that goes years and years without moaning and squealing, is more satisfying than new wheels, new rock sliders, new carpet, new bumpers, any new bling.

Well I'm not going to lie about it. A year ago is when I rebuilt it and it still works fine.

My original pump lasted 180k miles. This one has been in place for 40k miles. Rebuilds might get you by a while if done well. For the original poster, though, with no real experience, even installing a new one will be a big project.

I am not accusing you of lying about it brother. I am just stating that my criteria for a successful fix is different than yours.

Now when you guys say rebuilt pumps.

Are you talking about the NAPA, Kaegen, Auto Zone remanufactured generic pumps or the OEM TOYODA rebuilt pumps?

there is no such animal as a Toyota rebuilt pump. I would surmise that the reason for that is that Toyota agrees with me about how successfully you can rebuild PS pumps.

You mean before they leak?

What D'Animal is calling bearings, I would call bushings. On this year's Cruise Moab, I met a Toyota tech who said he found a replacement bushing that works to rebuild these pumps.

I will be rebuilding my leaker here in the next couple of weeks. I'll let you know how it goes...

Agree 200%! I dealt with about 5 or 6 garbage rebuilds until the shaft of the last rebuild simply wore a hole in the PS pump case. So I got a brand new OEM pump for about $400.00 and it has been PERFECT!

I would love to buy a new OEM pump, but If i bought that I would not be able to eat . I'm in the hole more than i would care to disclose with my education and
I'm living of fumes.

Called Cruiser Dan and he's sending me the rings. Hopefully I'll get them by next week.

If the PS pump is dead is there any harm in me driving her?

Thanks for your help and recs,
Patrick
