Hey guys,

I'm still putting everything together for the V8 swap on my woefully sick FJ60....

Is there a way to retain the stock power steering setup? It would probably require fabrication of a custom bracket and figure out some way to get a 6 groove Serpentine belt pulley to fit on the shaft I suppose (95 TBI 5.7L). Knowing my luck and knack for re-inventing the wheel, there's probably a ridiculously simple way to go about it.

Also, I've been told to use the short nosed water pump for this application due to the place ment of the engine as far forward as possible to obtain proper cooling. I'll be using either H55F/bellhousing adapter or Ranger Torque splitter/GM bellhousing.

Any thoughts?

Nick

Why not just use a GM Powers steering pump...cheaper and no need to reinvent the wheel??

There I go again over analyzing!!!

The lines would need to be custom made though, no? One end Toyota and one end GM? How did you do it? I'll bet NAPA could do it.

There is a GM PS pump to Toyota PS box hose available. CHeck Arond it's at MAF or Slee, or CCOT, can't remember now.

My local NAPA won't make power steering hoses. Too much liability.

I used a GM hose from the pump, then cut off the flare fitting and installed the flare nut from the Toyota and re-flared the line. The GM pump has better pressure, IIRC.

Before you get too excited about making new hoses. Mine threaded right up and I don't mean 3 foot cheater bar and "they went right in" I threaded it in most of the way with my fingers, no leaks. Stock Chevy hoses stock toy stearing gear. Power steering rocks.

One thought on the bellhousing adapter is the clutch. A lot of companies have "unique" clutch parts if you get the special bellhousings. I went with the ranger and stock bellhousing to keep as many stock parts as I could. I tried to do it a cheap as possible without setting myself up to have to redo stuff in the near future. I used the stock water pump and a fixed fan with no clutch to keep the fan out of the radiator.

I just put a 350 in, feel free to PM me if you've got any questions about it.

Checked at Slee, SOR, MAF, CCOT, TLC4x4 etc.... nothing.

I'll try NAPA. I could probably just get them to put a GM fitting on one end of each line.

Seek out a hydraulic equipment shop that makes lines for heavy equipment. Every medium-sized town will usually have one. Mine's done brake lines and PS lines for me pretty cheap - just need the two ends.

I can't account for TheGr8Doughboy's experiance - the threads/seals on my Toy and GM lines were NOT compatible, but who knows, give it a try.

One note: The Delco pump produces WAY more boost than the Toy, making pushing around meats alot easier, especially on the trail (and you can get one at any AP store in North America).

See now Nick if you would just bring your conversion out here I'd have you fixed up in 30 minutes!

Use the GM pump and the Toy steering box. Find a speed shop or any place that makes pressure hoses and they can keep the GM /Toy fittings and put hose inbetween.
Also remove the pressure valve from the output side of the pump and take it to your local pump rebuilder and have it checked for psi output. Depending on GM's application some are set a 1500psi and that's too much for the Toy box and you'll blow seals. And your Cruiser will steer with too little effort. I placed a 1200psi valve in and it's just right. 1000psi was ok but not strong enough.
Keep the water pump. Engine to radiator distance will be determined by where you want the shifter to come through the hump. You'll fab a fan cowl to make up the difference in space.

If you change your mind, January is a good month to do conversions?

Went GM all the way had to reflair one end just to make it cleaner set up but it is all GM 1999 vortec.

Steve-O

I think he is looking for a hose to connect a GM pump to Toyota PS box.

Toyota box and hoses to GM pump on mine. Nothing special, works great. My GM pump is for a pre-86 small block so maybe that makes the difference, I do not know.

Sorry, my error. I mis-read the header on your product description.

This IS the product that I referred to in my first post on this thread.

I guess that you would know these products a little better than me, eh?

Dont worry about it, that hose is pretty much all you would need to do it. No I dont know more about our products, I just pretend I know whats going on and people buy into it.
