Well, bit of a bummer but not the end of the world.

I use DeRale for all my coolers. They don’t anodize them and only make these available in raw aluminum. Well I know why now.

These coolers are welded together using the center extrusion and two end caps. The welding and manufacture is fine. The problem is that DeRale uses two different aluminum alloys and this causes issues during the anodize process. Either by themselves wouldn’t be an issue. But together they expose an issue you can see in this photo. Although the anodize process has been done, the alloy on the top caps (different alloy from bottom caps) doesn’t anodize in a way that’s visually pleasing. It’s a bummer.

So what does it mean going forward? I could send these back, again, but it’s very likely I’ll get the same results with the next batch. Instead I’ve made the executive decision to keep the anodize base and use a matching black paint to touch up the end that is discolored.

The end result has zero negative repercussions. It’s just a quick spray of paint to make everything uniform on one side of the cooler.

Now, I could have just done that and I guarantee not one person would have noticed. But I’d know and it would drive me nuts to not mention it.

I’ll be getting orders out in the next couple days. I gotta catch up.

It’s been a year of ups and downs. Today seems ok 🍺

No option from me of raw aluminum. It’s not what I want my kits to look like. But all the info is on the page if you just want to assemble the components on your own.

That’s what I ended up doing and painting it black. It’s held up fine. Never could catch it in stock but he’s taken my money on plenty of other things 🤣

This is what 50 power steering cooler kits worth of Made in USA Fragola fittings looks like. So happy to finally have a supplier that doesn’t suck ass. And since I’m a manufacturer I get to enjoy a HEALTHY discount. Woohoo!

I notice inside the cooler threads is anodized. This suggests they were not plugged for ano?

I learned a long time ago to be extremely cautious of anodizing anything with a blind cavity without plugging it. It's very common for process fluids to NOT get washed out completely and wreak havoc down the road. It can take years for the problem to become apparent when some sulphuric is left behind.

Consider plugging your coolers for anodize if it's not something you're currently doing.

Well down that path and the shop knows what needs to be done.

Looks like a good kit, but im a bit short on $$ and already about to drop a bit on Wits End to ship to Aus (for a bunch of other work). At this stage just thinking I'll replace hoses, either rebuild PS pump (unsure if I can do this with the tools I have) or exchange pump, then reconnect back to the OEM paperclip.

Australia is HOT so I'm trying to figure out if having the PS fluid run cooler is worth spending the money on this upgrade. From an oil perspective, the oil itself will retain its additives and lubricating properties longer if kept cooler... this would be important in a gearbox box I'm not sure if its super critical for a fluid that essentially acts as a hydraulic line. I figure any benefit of cooler PS fluid is probably also attainable if the fluid is drained and replaced.... at all. Just guessing, I don't know much at all!

DeRale just shipped out 20 coolers and should be arriving at my anodizer tomorrow. I only have 6 that are needed for back orders so the rest are available. I’ll turn on the link for those wanting one.

🍺

In from anodize is THIRTY power steering coolers. This will be the first time in two years that I will actually have inventory on the shelf for the 1FZ 80Series cooler upgrade.

Nine are going to go out for backorders then I have 21 for stock. The only hiccup is the manufacturer switched BACK to the original design which means I have a s***-ton of the wrong fittings 😢

So I’ll get those ordered up on Monday but all orders will be about a week out. Sorry about the added delay.
