I'm the new owner of an 83' 60 and the power steering pump was replaced with an aftermarket one just prior to me picking it up. With the latest cold snap here, I've noticed some PS fluid leaking from what it appears to be one of the hose clamps. The fluid was clear (like PS fluid) Do aftermarket pumps not accept Dexron fluid? I think it's got about 3000 miles on it since the pump was changed. Do I flush and fill with Dextron?

Yes. Toyota specs Dexron for the steering fluid. I would drain out what is in there and replace with the red stuff. To drain it, just unhook the return line ans start the engine. I was a bit leary about spinning all the way to empty but that's what the book says to do.

Yes, Dextron. Owner's manual "add DEXTRON or DEXTRON II automatic transmission fluid". You'll need to use DEX III of course...

And this is *my* idiotic question ...

What is the compatability between DexII and DexIII ? Why do we all assume that using DexIII is *ok* when the manual specs DexII ???

Just my wierd vibe ...

Cheers,
Cahil

It all interchanges between dex II and dex III. You only need around 2 qts. Buy red line synthetic. Worth every penney.
