Power Steering Box part number (1 Viewer)

I'm trying to replace my power steering box on my 94 cruiser. Does anyone know if the same part exists on other years? I'm trying to get a used one and wanted to know if could use one from a 93, etc. Did they make changes throughout 91-97? Thanks!

Also what is the correct name for this thing. If I search car-part.com for Power Steering Pump I get results in the $150 range and I get different results when I search for Steering Rack/Box in the $500 range. What I need is the pump mounted to the frame with 4 bolts through the frame. It weighs maybe 20 lbs. Thanks guys!!

It's a power steering box, also known as a steering gear. It also weighs about 34 lbs

The power steering pump is the gear driven pump that is attached to the motor.

I believe the steering gear is the same for all years. I've also read that the 80 series steering gear can be used on a 60 series somewhere on this site.

The bit attached to the frame rail with the four bolts is the power steering box and the bit attached to the motor is the pump.

I don't know the part number but I believe the boxes are pretty much the same throughout the years. If there is a change I would expect it to be around the 93 or 95 updates. If yours is 94 I reckon a 93 would be the same.

My 90 model needs its ps box replaced as well, so info on good places to source replacements (in OZ) will be handy.

Why do you need to replace yours? Mine has had numerous sector shafts twist in mine. Now I have rims with the correct offset it's time to try and make a good box last more than one hardcore trip.

I just sheered the sector shaft clean off today at Billings Canyon in Grand Junction. Now I'm playing the game of locating a replacement so I can get off the trail. Had to leave my baby at the trail head tonight.

What offset rims are you running? I reckon it's the offset of the rims causing to much leverage for the sector shaft to handle. I only had problems with my sector shaft when I was running deep dish rims on my 80. Now I am running OEM steelies with the correct offset I haven't had any more dramas with twisting my sector shaft.

During one of my searches for sector shaft fixes I came across heavy duty sector shafts available for Land Rovers over in England. Does any body know of aftermarket shafts for 80s? Anything has got to be better than the licorice thats standard.

Crikeys I've heard that these boxes are way overengineered for our wagons as it is.
Can't say I've heard of any bad stories except leaks like mine.

Topendyobbo, I've twisted my sector shaft about five or six times now. At about $800 just for the shaft it's not something you want happening all the time. I've only replaced mine once but it needs doing again before it breaks off like actionjacksons. Every time I came home from a hardcore wheeling trip when I had the offset rims I found the steering wheel would be sitting at a new angle away from the straight ahead position. It wasn't hard hits that were causing the damage either. The first time I was crawling over a 2foot high sand ledge in 2nd/Lo. The sand grabbed the wheel and reefed it out of my hands even though I was only idling up and over it. It put the steering wheel about 45* from the straight ahead. I replaced the shaft (it was that twisted that I had to press it out) then two weeks later I was driving over an exposed tree root in 1st/Hi when the same thing happened again. Since then I've twisted it to varying degrees back and forth.

You need the steering box - they go for ~$2500 new ... but I've seen good used ones in the $200-$250 range. Same box from '91-'97 ...

Hydro would be cool but it still wont solve the problem of a sector shaft made of licorice. If anything it would make twisting the shaft easier. Plus for my usage it would be no good as this is my DD which I travel 80km a day in. Actionjackson's future might be hydro assisted though going by the toughness of his truck.

I was able to get a used one out of a 94 for $225. Thanks to Uncle Ben, Kipper and Iggy who hooked me up. I am definately going to look at some kind of assist for my rig in the future ;p
