A thing of note that might help others avoid confusion: my truck had the rear DVD player option. In this, there was an adapter harness plugged into the R36 connector to run power to the rear player that was taking up a ton of valuable space behind the center assembly. The line ran out to the right side of the car and back from there. I was confused by it because it isn't in the wiring diagrams that I was using. I was leaving it in there until @jerryb pointed out that it wasn't a factory harness. I was guessing a DVD interface and was confirmed yesterday when I had the RR panel out. The two clues for me were that the female R36 had shrink wrap on it(factory connectors don't have this that I've seen) and there was an in-line connector further downstream behind the glove box that was not a factory style connector. I unplugged this harness and threw it out the door of the car, cursing it to be banished to hell for the troubles it was causing me. After that, the assembly was much easier to get into place.
The harness still attached. Note all the white wires, first clue to not factory:
The in-line connector by the glove box, clue #2:
YMMV, so follow the line for a bit to make sure you're not pulling something necessary!
HTH.
