Cool.

Guys, has anyone installed a standard US size radio in the Toyota 200mm OEM face plate (which is larger than the DFP-11-15)? If so, what spacer/adapter did you use? Final parts are arriving within a few days. Now need to decide on the stereo and the necessary mounting adapters harnesses etc. If it is too much of a pain, should I just order the DFP-11-15 and resell the Toyota one? Thank you!

like this, here

there are cheaper ones. the dfp looks better but it's a personal preference thing. It is a pain to mount those, more screws, tape etc.

Thank you for a suggestion, Jerry! After spending on all the parts to convert, the last I would do is skimp on a spacer adapter.

I am currently using spacers. I secured them just using some silicone to the plastic of the face. Doesn’t look as good as a one piece, but no big deal

I cannot wait to have an updated system. Guys, is it worth getting a dedicated GPS system? I was thinking of buying a Garmin software equipped unit because I have been using stand-alone Garmin gps devices forever. Is Android auto that seamless that Google maps loads/navigates quickly and without interruptions? It seems that a quality GPS stereo is $1k.

I have not tried android auto. I have been in vehicles that do have it and it seems to work fine. Apple CarPlay works fantastic though. I didn’t feel that I needed a dedicated gps, as my phone has Waze, google maps. Apple CarPlay is completely seamless turn by turn and I can use waze or google maps, waze is nice because of the crowd-sources data, making it better than a garmin gos, and auto-updates because it’s just an app on my phone.

BUT if you go in cellular-dead areas, a dedicated unit would be nice. But there are also apps for Android/iOS that can do offline navigation just as well(HERE WeGo maps). I say get a non-nav unit and use your phone.

android auto is awesome now. It wasn't at first. The g map/nav works extremely well. Pixel and corded with a pioneer, not wireless with a kenwood(next). It maintains focus, remains active in the background until you quit, resumes after unplugging or getting gas- ignition off/on. I don't remember if google maps auto stores map data without specific user input, but I think it's too the point where it does out of the box. I get expiring map prompts all the time on places I've landed.

the only reason I see to have a stereo with it's own gps is for any data you wanted to see related to speed, distance consumption stuff.
I think the default for most or all is the gps radio, then falls back on the speed input wire. (aftermarket stereos)

I wish I would have just went without gps and without optical drive. BUT it's nice to see your actual speed on a new stereo screen.

With regards to a head unit, I think I narrowed it down to the yet unreleased Kenwood eXcelon DMX706S shallow mount (no CD/DVD transport) with Android auto wireless capability. Not much is known about it besides the specs, but it will be released in April of this year, and methinks, at $650 it seems to be a great candidate. My ancient Samsung Note 5 will be upgraded to a Google phone that supports Android auto wireless protocol.

Njck22, your buttons layout is a mirror image of mine - I am pretty sure my temp knob is closer to the driver's (left) side. I wonder if your setup is for the Japanese (right hand side) market. I will verify tomorrow - it is not installed yet - I just received the last batch of my parts from the United Arab Emirates including the Toyota face plate, and the bottom part for the buttons.

I’m going to do this now, thanks to the guy a few posts back that posted everything for his LC with a 10/04 production date. Mines 09/04. Jerry, what do I need to do to get a harness from you good sir?

If you end up buying Jerry's harness, you don't need 9098012094 (it is on that list). I'd message him directly. Did you decide on what stereo to buy?

KershZ71, what adapter did you use to fit that stereo into the Toyota 200mm faceplate?

I ordered this and it came with 2 different inserts.
