Hi blokes,

I curruntly own a 60 series that I have had for 6 years but the rust is slowly winning. (Actually not so slowly anymore) The time has come to part with the old girl and get another toy.

I am here because I have a chance to get a 86 model 73 with a 3.4 Turbo diesel and 5 speed. (86 Model) or a 85 6 cyl petrol auto. I am here because I know from the 60 forums a lot of good advice is there for the asking.

So, Views or strongpoints weakpoints whatchout fors on both vehicles please.

I mainly use the 4wd for beach runing and towing a camper trailer with a little bit of long distance touring (5 to 6 hoiur) and bush camping.

The 60 has been great except the petrol is a little expensive to run but its not a daily and does arount 5-8 thousand Kilometers a year so its not a major thing as the petrols are cheeper to fix.

Couple of questions will the lockrights from the 60 fit the 73??
will the bullbar (and winch) from the 60 fit the 73??
Will the Towbar do the same???

Any othe advice ??

Thanks in anticipation

Daveo

What shape are they in? if equal, it is a no brainer to get the diesel. If the diesel is rusted to hell and has a million miles on it, get the gasser. From the very limited description it sounds as if the 73 is by far the better truck for your purpose.
The bullbar and towbar will not fit without modification, as the frame is less wide on the 73. The diffs are the same, so the lockrights should fit.

Much of a muchness ,but the 6 cyl petrol go really well on the beach.
The 60 bullbar will look odd on the 73 .

From the sounds of it ,another FJ60 would do the job. You would be able to use all the accessories and they are generally the cheapest to buy.

You might even find one on LPG

does anyone ever oil there trucks down there?

might be worth it... i've always herd good things about a little dust after oiling too!

Tks for the replies all.
Yes we oil em and grease em I even had electronic rust prevention.

IT was quite bad when I bought it 6 years ago but I knew then it was going to be a beach runner so it was cheap to start with. Its only cost me about 400 buck a year which is a cheep truck for what I do with it.

I once towed the camper 20 Kilometers at high tide (Stuffed up the tide tables badly) I was in 2nd gear low range full trottle all the way and she didnt miss a beat or get above normal. (Its a petrol and took me a quarter of a tank which is about a litre per kilometer)

I have a lot of faith in the old girl so I think ill take the advice of rosco and get another 60 and keeping all the good bits. He is right about 60,s are like bums over here and parts from the wreckers are plenty and cheeeep.

I found this and it look great for what I want but I am not to sure about the auto. They tell me they ar great in sand !!!

The 61 looks good. Its a pity it will end its days pulling campers on the beach though:D

I would also do the pinion bearing on that 61 and MICROLON the whole thing, motor ,tranny, x-case and so on.
