I read on another forum where a guy takes the chips out of his keys and zip-ties them behind the dash near the ignition switch. That way, he never has to worry about losing the expensive guts. This allows him to use keys without the chip in them. Of course, this method would prevent you from using the keyless entry, but it could potentially save a lot of money. I hardly ever use the keyless anyway.

The only concern with this method that I can think of is the continuous drain on the battery from the chip communicating with the ignition while the car is off. Any thoughts?

As long as you have the master, get the Camry blanks with the chip in them and you'll be golden. Way cheaper than the remote head keys and last a while;)

Please elaborate on this as my dealership wants 300 for the and program job. Any way to save a few dollars helps.

Yes, please elaborate. I have always ordered Landcruiser blanks off Ebay and had them cut at the dealer for free and programmed them myself. That still doesn't matter if I lose the key with the guts in it. I break the landcruiser keys about once a year. What is different about the Camry keys?

One big flag for me would be that your truck can now be stolen much, much easier.

this....even though it's a small chance that somebody would know you have the transponder by the ignition you shouldn't do it. Take the key, get a copy made and keep the transponder on a key chain sans mechanical key. I never thought in my lifetime my beloved landcruiser would get all shot up in a parking lot...yup it did. Anything can happen...make it harder for them to get to your personals...

I don't think this is a big concern or likely problem. The more certain issue is what TM is speaking of. The keys have chips in them to talk to certain systems in the car. With a master key permanently in the car next to the ignition, there's a probably it's constantly talking to part of your security system that defeats the fuel injection system and immobilizes the car.

Does it matter what year range the Camry keys are? Will the dealer still cut them to a Landcruiser vin#?

I am liking this idea, as it would let me take my car key kayaking with me.
