A local snowmobile club has sent a request to the town to close a local trail. The item is on the agenda to be discussed at the next town meeting. We will have representatives at the meeting, but we are requesting you to voice your concerns before the meeting.

This trail is used by all user groups, not just snowmobilers and 4x4 trucks. Hikers, ATVs, and several other groups all use the trail. We would like to keep this trail open so it can continue to be enjoyed for years to come. If the snowmobile club gets its way, the road will be gated and locked on both ends and all travel will be illegal.

Early 2008, Exploring NH held a trail cleanup and removed over 150 tires and several dump-truck loads of garbage from the road. Many illegal trails were closed and blocked to discourage continued use. Land owners along the road as well as town officials were very pleased with the turnout. Since then, the trail has stayed clean and has been more enjoyable for everyone.

Land to wheel on is becoming more and more scarce, and in NH, Class 6 roads and private land are all we have left. It would be a shame to see this trail, an historic Class 6 road, be closed forever just to please one club of people that use the trail for ¼ of the year. To help save this trail, please sign the petition, or better yet, write a letter to the Board of Selectmen before January 23rd.

Thank you guys! There will definitely be some representation at the town meeting. I think the issue is a four-wheeler may have snow-wheeled on it after the club groomed it for snowmobiles. I do not own a sled, so I dont know what that really means. Anyway, hopefully we can propose to close the road to 4wd during the winter months like I have seen in other towns. Currently, there is no signage or restrictions on the road, so hopefully signs with closure dates will appease all parties. The town seems to support keeping it open, since Exploring NH did a trail clean-up this summer on this exact road. The ironic thing is that for the trail clean-up, the snowmobile clubs were invited to particpate, but declined to be involved.

Done.

I signed the petition, and I have to stop at the town hall this week anyway, so I'll deliver my letter personally to the Selectman's Office. Let me know if you want me to be at the meeting.

Thanks for posting this.

As of today [1/21/09], this item has been taken off of the meeting agenda due to the huge response received. If, in the future, this topic is brought up again, notification will be sent to all those who (e)mailed letters.

This doesnt mean the topic is dead, but it is dead for now.

Thats good news.

Just got this email:

The Board of Selectmen has scheduled a meeting to discuss closing Old Greenhill Road with the Sno-goers on Monday, March 2, 2009 at 6:30 PM.

Ya, it kinda pisses me off that I live around the corner from the town hall, yet I already have a meeting scheduled that night, so I can't make it. Argh...

Looks like the Sno-Goers (or whatever they are called) don't like to share. I like the compromise of closing it to 4x4's in the winter as long as they close it to snowmobiles in the summer:flipoff2:...

I signed it. Hope it helps- keep us posted.
