On my HJ60 I have a water separator (from a HZJ75) mounted on my chassis rail. But I find it hanging to low underneath the rail. I am afraid a rock or whatever will hit the little plastic drain sooner or later.

I would like to place it on the firewall in the engine bay; connecting the rubber hose coming from the fuel line to the separator and onwards to the fuel pump. It will be placed higher than fuel pump (approx. at the height of the air filter).

Will there be any problem mounting the water separator at this position in the engine bay? Or does it need to be lower than the fuel tank to be able to work?

you better place this question in the diesel section .. you will get more comments ..

factory 2H fuel filter it's higher than IP anyways ..

Luke ,thats the 75 series main fuel filter with a water sensor attached ,rather than a dedicated water separator.
These are normally mounted on the RH inside fender on a 70 series higher than the pump and fuel tank,so I dont see why you couldnt do the same.
Fix it temporarily to make sure the flow wont be affected.
I agree its not in a good position where is is now.

Are you also using the 2H fuel filter as well? You could probably ditch that. My troopy just has what you have in the pic.
These also come with a double bracket so you can add a prefilter.

This is how it sits in my troopy(someone elses pic)

Here's where I installed mine on my swap. Works well and no issues in over 10,000 miles.

It is exactly the same as the Nissan TD4.2 filter which is mounted high up on the firewall well above the lift pump in the rotary IP. I wonder if the filter part numbers are the same. Sure looks the same. It is a none issue putting it up on the firewall. You are right to be concerned about where it is now. You can put them down there but they better be in a heavy duty steel case. They are also much easier to service up on the firewall.

The brackets are aluminum and it is easy to service all the filters in one area. The SS lines and AN fittings last forever. The 135 degree off the filter head worked great.

Being in the engine compartment is much safer than under the vehicle too.

I had to remote mount the oil filter to clear the front drive shaft wth the Isuzu.

Thank you all!

I placed the water separator on the firewall. Feels much better...

Are you still running the stock filter?

Yep, doesn't hurt...

Maybe not,but you are running 2 filters, not a filter and a water separator, which can slow down fuel flow.
But if you havent noticed any difference, its probably ok.

I am running it like this for two years already and never had problems with fuel.

And it seems to me, that the fuel pump must be strong enough to suck the fuel through 2 filters. Otherwise it would be a very weak fuelpump.

Yep,the feed pumps have a fair bit of reserve capacity.
How most dual filter systems work is they have a large micon filter that stops larger particles and then a smaller micron filter near the fuel pump .
The larger micron filters are much cheaper and help keep the other more expensive filter clean.
