Looking for a portable generator for my 5th Wheel and camping needs. I will be charging the batteries on my boat at the same time I will be running the AC in the 5th wheel. I don't need to do both at the same time but it would be nice.
I was looking at PowerMax XP4400E for $449.99. Its rated at 3500 watts with a 6.5 hp motor.
Need some feed back before I buy. Can someone steer me in the right direction?

Honda EU2000i is what I'd buy. Yes, it is expensive, but it is very quiet, light, and sips the gas.

another real nice smaller Honda is the EB3000http://www.hondapowerequipment.com/products/models.aspx?page=models&section=P2GG&category=cyclo

while not super small, one person can lift it with no problem, quite, low fuel use, just a darn nice Genset, borrow one from a buddy this year, has a built in battery charger as well

if you get the EU2000 or similar you can join them togetther so 4000 watts

look at the horsepower of the motor, it needs to be 2+ times the wattage, so a 5K genset would need 10-11hp motor to really put out 5000 watts

yup, from what I read, the Honda EU1000 and 2000 are just the ticket for camping etc. For that kind of use, the noise level is critical and the Hondas are tops for near silent running. Expensive but high resale value.

Also look at Decimel ratings when considering buying a Generator for RV/Camping.

Decibel ;)

the construction generators are LOUD, just keep that in mind..

Okay. I bought a pretty old motorhome (1976 gmc midas), and size was an issue. As much as I would like a silent generator I had to account for three things:
1. I won't be using it much.
2. I'm cheap.
3. I hate camping next to people so noise isn't a priority.
I bought this: flea-bay chinese

To be honest the two key factors were size and price. I spent $300 and it fit in the hole. I've now got 2,000watts on the generator side, a 750 watt k-mart inverter (which is enough to run a 19 flat and a playstation for the kiddos), and a battery tender to keep the charge up to snuff while it sits.

I've used it a half a dozen times now. Because of proximity to the sleeping quarters, I've been using an extention cord and keeping it away from the rv. So far so good. It was a bit finicky about priming the first couple times but seems to have worked itself out (takes a couple pulls but not bad). As the summer goes on and I abuse it, I'll post up and let fellow mudders know how it holds up. I fugure if I get one summer out of it I've re-couped my $300 out of it. I noticed the price has gone up a little from the guy I ordered it from. As is though, it was at my doorstep from cali to wyoming in a week; worth it.

Careful with the Chinese generators. I bought a 2000 watt cheapie for a landscape trailer, for hedge trimmers, etc. I could not run a hair dryer on 1600 watts with it. A borrowed Honda 1000 watt gen had more capacity than mine.

I bought the cheapie because I figured if it was stolen I would be out less money.

It was stolen last week... :crybaby:

Why throw away good money buying chinese crap? I'd rather spend the extra $$ and buy quality.

So it matters less WHEN it gets stolen.

No s***. I don't feel nearly as bad as I do about the other stuff that got swiped. BUT I will probably replace it with a small Honda and keep it with ME or under lock and key... still with me.

The Chinese unit was a disappointment. It was only good for hedge clippers, it did run an angle grinder, but not a circular saw. It was worth what I paid for it, about $200.00

Add another disappointment for the chinese generators. I bout one that was 4K with electric start. Well when my parents power went out this past winter it lasted about 5 or 6 hrs. and left washers beneath it. Haven't had a chance to open it up to see what went wrong. My dad got a good deal on a Honda soon after.

x 3 on the Honda. We have an old EB3000 and it'll run all day on a gallon of fuel and require only minimal maintenance. It's small and easy to handle and stow.

I've been looking for another for Florida, but so far have come up empty.
