Its time I replaced the canvas sides to my pop-up roof Toyota LC … I’m in discussion with various companies and even thinking about tackling it myself… my question is what’s the best material to use, a heavy cotton, vinyl, sail material ….

It needs to be water and wind proof, but sill flexible so when the roof is down I can roll it in on its-self. The old fabric looks like classic cotton canvas, same found on 80’s family tents…

I would like to have a rear and side awning made at the same time..

Kind regards
Matthew

Matthew,

My older brother bought patio funiture for Wal-Mart for 10 years and he is a big fan of Sunbrella fabrics. Sunbrella is used on Mercedes, Porsche, Ferrari, and numerous other car manufactures convertable tops. Doesn't fade and it is water proof and should hold up to the wear. Seems to me to be the best choice of what you are looking for.

The bad news is that I have no idea where to get the stuff at. How this helps... (my 2 cents)

Another vote for Sunbrella. Talk to your local upholstery shop about it, if they dont do that kind of stuff they will know who does. or if you are near SoCal i can help you. would you please post some pics of your rig so I can get a look at it?

Sunbrella is available through any good commercial awning shop- and they can cut and sew for you. Not sure where you are but if in SF Bay Area drop me a line and I can refer you to a good shop. Just recovered a beautiful awning for me at work.

Yes any awning shop, also look for a shop that does custom car covers. Many upholstery shops will everything from awnings to cheirs.

i sell awnings and can get whatever material you need. Send me the details in an emai if you haven't already gotten it taken care of and i'll see what i can do for you.
