I have a 71 FJ40 with a 78 2F engine. However the distributor has points and a condenser, but all the places I have tried to find these parts I run into the problem that they don't list points and a condenser for that model. How do I figure out which points and condenser to buy?

Thanks for any and all help.

Go to the parts store and ask them to get you the parts for a 1974.... ;)

You do have a Toyota distributor right? There were some aftermarket set ups that could have been swapped in that still used points....

Good luck!

Any way you could post up a couple pics?

I'll try to get a couple pics up in a couple days. I have been working twelve hour nights and have not been able to check online. Thanks for the help

Wouldn't this be a perfect time to get rid of the points altogether and get the Pertronix Ignitor, electronic ignition?? Its only about $80 and would seem to solve your problem of not being able to find parts as well as provide a more reliable, solid state ignition setup.

How easy is the switch out? Have lots of your guys used this electronic ignition system? I would need help in putting it in for sure. Thanks for all the replies.

It is truly a 15 minute job. The instructions kinda suck in the pertronix package as there aren't and pictures....and dummies like me need pictures. However, once you get in there, it is pretty self explanatory and goes quickly and easily.

It is no harder than installing a new set of points. However, I would say that if you are concerned at all, just take it to a good shop and have them do it.

Good luck!

If you truly can't get the parts, I'd go for the Pertronix. But being me, I'd buy a spare to carry. If the Pertronics goes four paws up on the trail, it's a 15 min swap. Then send in the bad for a replacement spare. Good to go.

Pertronix are not a completely bulletproof solution - they can fail and leave you absolutely stranded. Points and condensor take maintenance but can be coaxed back to life in some cases. Spares are cheap and it is a good thing to know how to do.

I forget exactly the circumstances but my pertronix magnet slipped on the dizzy shaft and startead wearing against the body - lots of dust and a worn magnet.

I am currently going back to points and condensor and keeping the pertronix as a spare - you need to have a spare in either case IMO

Heres my dizzy with petronix

I finally got a digital cam and now I have pictures of my dizzy to add. I think it is a toyota distributor and I was advised to buy points and condenser for a 74, would this be about right?

Here are a couple more. I don't know how well you can tell from them. If I need some different angles I will try to get them later this week.

Can anyone help with this? I am pretty sure it is a Toyota distributor, however I'm not sure what year it is.

I am going to buy points and condenser. May not matter, but if it does any info would be muchly appreciated.

I have been searching the forum for suggestions on plug wires as well, but to no avail. So, anyone have any preferences. I have always been told that alot of the older engines needed the metal/wire core plug wires and not the graphite core wires. Is there anything to this? Thanks again.

Who put the engine in? Can you ask if they for some reason kept the 71 distributor? Somebody else may be able to tell by looking, but that would be my guess. Probably a lot of cross over on parts between years too for the points and condenser. Ask your parts guy to check the part numbers of a 70 against a the last year he lists in his computer, if they are the same buy it.

I have been happy with MSD wires, but they didn't turn my 2F into a V8 or anything.

Reviving this in an effort not to burden people with multiple threads.

Having trouble finding a condenser for my '79 distributor. For example the one SOR has is listed as OEM CONDENSER-Fits 1/75-- GEN-NON USA*OEM. Similar on other sites. Would this one work and why is only the non-usa available for this later model?

Also, I thought about going with the pertronix, but they also only have conversions listed to '77 for some reason.

Any input appreciated.

Looks like you’re right! I’m learning.

So I would just replace the points inside the cap?

It does have that igniter assembly. It sits on top of a black starter.

I think what I'm referring to is the "signal generator" under the dizzy cap as referenced in the FSM. I mistakenly referred to it as the points, apologies.

When I opened it to take a look there was some corrosion there and I took some fine sandpaper and cleaned it up. Checked the gap and it was within spec. I wasn't sure if this is a part that requires occasional replacement like points do.
