Hi folks,
Recently I've been chasing down a lean condition in my 2002, a PO174 and a PO171 code, with a periodic cylinder 2 misfire. I did lots of trying to diagnose it myself - looking for vacuum leaks, swapping the MAF sensor, new O2 sensors, smoke machine, etc. to no avail before taking it to my mechanic to look at it. I had to jump the car a couple times during my diagnosing process, and I had to jump it to get it to my mechanic.
My mechanic also could not figure out what was causing the codes after looking for vacuum leaks and running his smoke machine. He swapped the coils on cylinder 2 which oddly gave misfires on bank 1. He sent me out the door without figuring it out (he didn't charge me though).
When I went to pick up the car the battery was totally kaput and wouldn't take a jump off my wife's little 4-cyl Mazda. So, I went to O'Reilly's and got a new battery.
Now there's no codes and it runs perfectly.
Is it possible that a weak battery was linked to these codes? My thought is that maybe the O2 sensors weren't getting enough voltage from the battery while the car was running and so was giving the computer bad data and it was trying to fix a problem that wasn't there, creating a lean condition. However I'm not sure if that's possible or if the battery is even a consideration for voltage on the O2 sensors while the car is running.
Thoughts?
