I replaced the stem on my showers cold water control due to a drip. ( I have the three controls, hot-diverter-cold) The whole stem looked terrible and after 23 years i figured a new one could not hurt, I was wrong.

Now when you turn on the cold water just a trickle water comes out, turn a little more and I get a loud pop like someone hitting the pipe with a hammer and the flow of water stops.

The stem is threaded in tight so I am at a loss.

What have screwed up this time?

Thanks in advance

Take it out and make sure the screw holding the seal on is tight. Sounds like it's floating around a little. As well make sure the seat inside the valve is tight. That bang is called water hammer. That's what happens when water that is flowing stops abruptly.

Yes sir, you win. The screw holding the washer had backed off, I hate plumbing followed closely by painting. Would not have been surprised if I had found Barbie's hairbrush in it either.

lol. I worked at an older apartment complex back in the day and that was always a problem. 500 units with old plumbing. I got good at yanking valves and replacing washers.

Drains and toilets were the worst. I've seen things I would pay to unsee.

I am a plumber. I can agree with that.
