I did some front end work on my girlfriends '92 4x4 4runner recently (replaced rotors, pads, rebuilt calipers, bled the brakes and repacked the bearings) and after all was said and done the problems she was experienced all vanished but about a week later she experienced a brand new issue. There's an intermittent rumbling sound/vibration coming from the front drivers side wheel area. At first I thought maybe I didn't torque the lock nut on that side tight enough so I went in and tightened it ever so slightly and checked that the wheel didn't spin with too much resistance. Seemed good and for the next few days she said the issue was gone but sure enough about a week later she noticed the sound slowly coming back every once in a while and after a few days it would happen much more often and for longer amounts of time. It starts out pretty consistent when you first start driving the car then after about 15 minutes of driving on the highway the sound goes away. The fact that it goes away temporarily when I retorque the lock nut makes me fairly certain theres something going on with the bearings but after the sound came back a second time I took the bearings out and cleaned them up again to inspect for damage or maybe a piece of grit that got in the first time but they look good, no signs of damage or irregular wear that I can see. Before I go in there again and take things apart I'm curious if you guys have a suggestion of what might be the culprit.
Here's a video of the sound:
I had to hold the phone down under the dash to get close to the sound, if you listen carefully you'll hear it start shortly after the video begins and eventually goes away and returns and goes away again. It's not terribly loud but its obvious and there is a slight vibration feeling as if you're driving over a grittier section of asphalt.
Here is the torque procedure I followed, I found it on a forum:
* Torque spindle nut to 43 ft. lbs.
o Spin hub right 4-5 rotations
o Spin hub left 4-5 rotations
* Loosen inner spindle nut
o Spin hub right 4-5 rotations
o Spin hub left 4-5 rotations
* Torque spindle nut to 43 ft. lbs.
o Spin hub right 4-5 rotations
o Spin hub left 4-5 rotations
* Loosen inner spindle nut
o Spin hub right 4-5 rotations
o Spin hub left 4-5 rotations
* Torque spindle nut to ~21 ft. lbs.
The passenger side has had no issues and I did everything the same so I'm not sure what's going on at this point, would love some feedback from folks on here.
