Please convince me to keep my 80....

I'd only drive an 80 if I wheeled it hard. You've already made your decision with the Sequoia, so move on and good luck

Where in VA are you headed?

The 80 especially modded and lifted is quite handy in traffic, at least around NOVA. One thing I can definately vouch for is that you will go somewhat insane without an 80 to drive. It just sorta leaves one feeling as though there is a void in their being. You could probably get the 80 transported for $1200 to the East Coast so as not to have to worry about the logistics if that helps at all.

uhh... there is no 'compelling' rational reason to drive an 80 on paved or even most dirt roads. That is the beauty of it.... we have very few irrational decisions left in daily life. The 80 makes me smile every time I drive it. Even every time I look at it... but it falls in the category of 'compelling' and rational the way boats and motorcycles do. Consider it a toy, a luxury, a hobby, a vice, an alternative therapist - call it whatever you want - but no-one 'needs' an 80. Yet I will be very hard-pressed to get rid of mine.

VA has some fun 80 exploration options - you have the Appalachian Mtns to the west, the beach runs at Assataegue and OBX the the east, and the boys at Iron Pig to help the perpetual building process that is part of the 'fun'. I just drove 2300 miles the past 8 days in mine, from Maine to OBX and back, and it was as much fun on the beach as it was traversing NYC. Can't really explain why... I just find it a very satisfying vehicle to drive in both urban and rural places. We could have taken the Subaru and cut the fuel costs in half, but the 80 is just more fun, so we feed it - and it feeds us in return.

I like reffugs simplified explanation - you will go somewhat insane without an 80. Maybe try a 12 step program? Hide it at a friends for a few weeks and see if you can go cold turkey?

We all know these cruisers don't get the best mpg, that's why I have a 1996 Corolla as my daily driver. It's cheap on the wallet and good on the gas. I put on an average of less then 200 miles a month on the cruiser now, and don't ever think twice about getting rid of it. If you ask me, don't get rid of your cruiser, but as always.....go with your gut feeling. Do what's best for your familly. Personally for me, I hate car payments! I'd never again, buy a car to plan on paying it for another 5-6 years. THat's a long time. Good Luck.....

x2. I have a 28 MPG city/35 MPG hwy as a DD and the Cruiser only gets out to wheel or to haul 4+ people and/or lots of stuff.

EDIT: ditto on the insane. Or you would have to block 'mud from your internet browser and enter a rehab program in a Prius factory.

Keep your 80 as there will never be anything else like it. It's paid for and you will use it in VA.

Now, you mentioned wishing you had a new vehicle and a wheeler. The Seq is not a wheeler. Did you not consider a 100 instead of the Seq? You'd a had both in one package and then could have justified selling the 80?

I know my kids get excited about the 80, and somewhat my wife's 4runner. I know they wouldnt be excited about a camry, ect.

keep it, even if it means moving it later in the process

call it whatever you want - but no-one 'needs' an 80

I need an 80. I have four kids and take them rock crawling. All four are aboard in this pic from this weekend. Nothing like wheeling on mud covered ice on a reasonably difficult trail with 3, 4, 8, & 9 year old plus :princess:. My three year old girl says to me "Dad, I HATE this". She was all smiles by the end of the day. See, I *need* an 80.

I was born and raised in Northern VA. You don't need an 80 in NOVA, but it sure would be fun for beach trips and that wheeling you guys do at construction sites at night :flipoff2:

It's just a truck. If it is really stressing you out, unload it. If you want another one later, buy one. I know I'm being flip about it, but life is too short to worry about a car. If you get down to it and can't bear getting rid of it, then you know you should keep it.

Take it easy.

yup, my DD is basically paid for in gas savings by not using the 80 for commuting...

So, I get a free DD car to use by having an 80! Wow! Isn't that great? :D

Reclinin hinges on the 2nd row?

reclining hinges for the second row

Please, can you give me more info on this mod? I'd love to do the same for my 94 LC. Thanks

I think you should do what is best for your family, and your personal situation. I, personally, would never, ever, ever trade mine in. If anything, it would sit in the driveway, Waiting until I wheeled it, and I would drive something else to work. It seems like you have a bunch of extra vehicles. Why the 80? Why not the T100, or the vehicle in Cali to get rid of? And by the way, I also lay under the truck and stare. I thought I was alone in that regard. Good luck bro ...:D

I have considered trading the 80 for a 4cyl Camry(35 mpg) or a 4cyl 2nd or 3rd gen 4runner(20 mpg)

...every form of refuge has its' price :bang:

didn't read all the posts, but here is my take....

If it's paid for, just keep it. Minimize the insurance and minimize the DD usage. Have it for wheeling trips, snow storms, taking the dogs out, ect..

Get the sequoia and use it as your DD. What will you really be losing by keeping the 80? A couple grand for a trade in and $400 a year on insurance?

Ok, agreed with Jungle ....

I've kicked this thought around for a while. One thing remains...the cruiser is PAID FOR. Any money spent driving her is the monthly payment of a newer more economical car that would/could replace her. I enjoy working on the cruiser, I enjoy driving the cruiser, my chest swells with pride at the number of people that say "I love those, what year...."

There is just something about that "I drive a LandCruiser" phrase that makes me happy. I love just knowing she is in my driveway right now ready and willing to do ANYTHING I want...drag a stump out of the ground...pull cars out of ditchs...drive through heavy rain like a train on rails, plow through mud and water puddles, intimidate little civics that think they should be in the lane the CRUISAH is in.

I love the room inside it, and the fact that it is much more rugged. I'd hate to go back to a "Oh no, not the carpet" type car. Underpowered, slow, fuel guzzling, but the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. I wash it, touch it, talk to it, look at it, and think about it more than my Lexus. There is nothing in my life (except my wife) that I think about more. I work it into conversations, I read the forums twice a day, I daydream about preventitive maintenance, and I realish it.

I love grabbing the mountain bikes and throwing them inside just to head out for a drive to our favorite trails. I love my ARB because it says "GO AHEAD...PULL OUT...SUCKAH..." I love popping my front end up on curbs when pulling into parking spots...just because I can. I love running over shoulders to get into turn lanes because the traffic was backed up.

I love people that drive newer cars than mine breaking their necks just to get a good look at my big white 80. I love that when I put my blinker on people let me over more in the 80 than in the Lexus. I think that has to do with respect.

I love just sitting under the 80 on a crawler just staring at the beefy suspension parts.

When I die....bury me in my 80.:steer:

When it all comes down to keep or sell...it is harder to get one, than to keep one.

One of the best justifications of an 80 I've read in a long time. Well said.

Sell your 80 Kliers. You are a Sequoia guy.

:flipoff2:

It just sorta leaves one feeling as though there is a void in their being

I think this is the most important and philosophical thing you have ever said in your MUD life....;)

I agree with R....

Without an 80, your identity becomes, well, one without an 80.

Christ, I begged for a job with CDan because of my 80...

I think this is the most important and philosophical thing you have ever said in your MUD life....;)

I agree with R....

Its the type of philosophy one is only capable of after having to climb the mountain.

It as beno and I both know is the kind of thing one has to experience before the true nature of the loss can be understood.

12 mpg is not that big of deal when you drive 100-200 miles a month on it!!

$1800, I bought a Geo Prizm (Toyota Corolla) for my daily driver, so they are both paid for / no car pmts. Insurance on both of them are less than HER car.

Keep the cruzr, buy a cheap dd with great mpg (mine is getting 34) and the gas will pay for the DD within a year, especially if we see $4-5 this summer per gallon.

There are not many (if any) other vehicle combos that you can drive to the trail, wheel it and drive home. (Maybe even pull a camper with you, etc)

On the really nasty days / wife might prefer to "risk" the Cruzr too, I know my wife insisted I drive mine instead of the newer cars, etc.
