5-speed box is soo much smoother - and also includes a better engine/gearbox interaction.

OTOH, the new dash is really not good, especially the non-nav ones, when it comes to HVAC controls. I have both types w/o nav and the newer one is very user un-friendly, absolutely counter-intuitive; and therefore less safe as you have to look at what you're doing with the controls. The old one is easy to learn to use without looking, and much faster to change settings.
To have HVAC setting on the nav-screen must be even worse, not to mention the other draw-backs of an old nav, and what happens when the screen fails. IOW: You need a pre 2002 w/o nav and a 5-sp box.:steer:

The newer ones also have better airbags, like side-curtain, but don't know the years and details in your market.

The "legal trouble" Carfax is in is a class action lawsuit brought by car dealers. The dealer may not have wanted to run a carfax, but you could. When I buy a used vehicle I consider it worth the investment to get reports from both Autocheck and Carfax before I close the deal because neither is perfect and each may find things the other misses. Small money for extra peace of mind.

Find out when brakes, shocks, tires, etc have been changed as well as timing belt. There's easily a few grand to replace these items.

Here are a few subtle differences, if your rig be a child transport.

-Do both have rear DVD players?

-Many if not most 03's have 2nd row airbags for added safety, the 02 does not.

-Many if not most 03's have a backup camera.

... I know they run forever but why not start with a lower mileage cruiser for a couple grand less?
uh, because they run... forever? I don't bat an eye at high mileage cruisers. I haven't owned one with less than 145K miles on it. :meh: I'd take 5 spd, curtain airbags, and all the rest over an older one anyday.

my 03 had nav but no backup camera, some came with it? must have been an option...

i did not see rear DVD player. I saw some sort of what looked like radio controls on the back of the center console.

the DVD player will be in the center console, you just load a DVD in there and if your in park it will play on the front nav screen...

^^^ no cam on my '03.

Go with the 03 like mine. The Nav works fine when I use it and Toyota still releases map DVDs every year. Obviously the NAV / sound system is not as advanced as what you find today but you can easily install a VAIS Tech adapter and you will be able to connect and listen to music via Sirius or iphone.

Climate control details are accessed via touch screen but 99.9% of the time I have it set to Automatic and just change the temp settings which is a regular button on the dash.

The whole dash area is much better looking in the 2003+ and you get the gated shifter which I like much better.

CarFax is nice but I think it is over rated. Dealer maintenance records are the key. Have you ever read the CarFax disclaimer? Essentially it says that they report on what they can find but there are in no way guaranteeing that the records they provide are complete. In other words, if someone has an accident and takes the car to be repaired at a less than reputable shop, it will probably not be in CarFax and CarFax guarantee does not apply.

Ying/Yang IMO. 03+ A750 is great. But so is not having integrated Nav/HVAC.

If someone could make a 750 retro kit into a pre-03 that would be the bomb. What all would be required? ECU, Trans, Trans Mounts, Shifter Gate, Instrument Cluster, Shafts... ya that's a lot. ;-(

For what it's worth, there are plenty of NAV/HVAC/backup camera 100s on here, that travel off the paved road with no problems. I wouldn't buy a 100 expecting all of those things to poo the bed.

Completely agree with you. It's just nice to be able to upgrade electronics to technology not invented when Bush was president. The first time.

Isn't robred still working in the nav/climate control thing or is that pretty much dead? Only the 04's and newer (lx) at least came with Te backup cam. I installed my own backup cam and got the integrated rear view mirror and screen. Works well. Was gonna go with the Vais but elected not to. I might switch back and go with the Vais. Never know.

No, he ran out of time and drive. It's a daunting task. He is making his data open source, though, so someone could pick up and run with that ball.
