The solid axle I have for my SAS looks like it was on a truck that spent some time around salt water. There was some sand tucked in various places that fell out when I dissassembled it, plus there is some minor pitting on the surface of the ball the knuckle pivots on.

I'm not worried about the strength of the ball being compramised, but I'm wondering about the effectiveness of the seals and wipers...I'm thinking the pits will fill with grease and that will be the end of it, but thought I would ask if anyone has any experience with this issue?

I didn't have any pits, but it is only grease in there, it won't come running out the slightest opening. Just make sure you sand the ball so that the pits don't ruin the wipe seal. A little bit of grease on the ball is normal anyway. Sounds like you have it under control.

Mine was the same way, I smeared a coat of JB Weld on the balls, waited a few days for it to cure, then I sanded them smooth with some emory paper. Worked great, it's still there, no leakage.
