O.K. I've been trying to remove the pitman arm on my girlfriends 40 to replace the steering box seal, and I' ve broken two pullers (one cheapo and one $30). I've tried hosing the thing down with liquid wrench for days, heating both the shaft and arm with a propane torch and tapping with a hammer. I'm getting to the point where I'm thinking about cutting the damn thing off and getting a new/used arm. Anyone want to talk me out of it with any other suggestions, or anyone out there got a used pitman arm for a 74. Any help, thanks.

Sit back-

Have a cold drink-

Get relaxed-

Go at it again with a fresh perspective, I would try heating it up again and smacking it with a hammer while pulling with a puller.

It will pop off... but it would be fun to cut it off!

Did you get the pitman itself red hot? I doubt you are getting enough heat with a propane torch unless it is a flame thrower. I have used a oxy-acetylene rosebud, pitman puller, pickle fork, and BFH at the same time to pull a pitman before. Pretty exciting when it does turn loose.

Damn I was really hoping you'd say cut that mutha off and I'll sell you a new one cheap!! :D Yeah I'll keep giving it a try, let ya know. Thanks.

Yeah I busted a one puller myself a couple months back. Had to heat the pitman arm up then crank on the puller, that finally convince her to pop off. Good luck!

Do you guys think these methods will work for a center arm? (i.e. heating, pulling, hammering all at once?)

These methods work for every component on your rig!

Hell, these methods are LIKELY to be necessary for every component on your rig!

lifetime warranty on a pitman arm puller is the only way to go!

i believe mine is a k-d tools, and it is my third one.

tapping, no place for tapping here, wack the living crap out of it.
never, never had luck using a pickle fork on a pitman?

propane only torch, campfire, plumbing, really is not worth burning otherwise.

oxy/acy, with the puller cranked on pretty good.
heat the arm, not the shaft, red hot in just one or two areas will do it, then use something to cool just the shaft (wd, moist rag, etc..) the difference in expending and contracting is all it needs, HAMMER if it doesnt pop off.

HA HA! "Wack the living crap": yeah, it required FURY and BIG TIME ADRENALIN to achieve removal for me.
