Looking at different tires on my 80, which only sees around ~5K a year...the TOYO M/T's are on perpetual backorder...

so I'm looking at the:

MT/R's 315/75R/16
IROK 36X13.50X16
Pitbull rocker 35X13.50X16
Trxxus 315/75/R16

anyone running the Pitbulls??? Comments?

I have a friend running the Pitbull Rockers on his early Bronco, you can see the review here:

http://www.4x4wire.com/reviews/pitbulls/

We went wheeling yesterday and were discussing the tires. They work GREAT on the trail, on par with the MT/Rs on my truck. They are pretty loud though, more so than I would want on an 80. On a 40 with an open top that sees limited road use they would be great, but one of the nice things about the 80 is the creature comforts and quiet, comfortable ride. I think the Pitbulls would negate some of that. They are also tall and W-I-D-E. They will probably crown if you use the stock rims and you may need wheel spacers to prevent rubbing. I would also be willing to wager that they will be every bit as tall as the 36" Swampers.

I run MT/Rs on my 80 and think that they are very well balanced and compliment the rig. I'd consider TrXus M/Ts too, although I have heard that they are a little softer and wear faster. I have personally had balance issues with Swampers in the past (once again, maybe acceptable on some rigs but not the 80 IMO) but have not used the TrXus in particular.

How about the Nitto Mud Grapplers? I passed an F-350 running those the other day...loudest tires I've ever heard.

I love the PBR's on my 40....I think they would suck on the 80....

PB has their Growler line...little more street friendly, but still very aggressive for offroad use...and a few "better" sizes...if they'd had a radial, I'd have a set on my 80 now....

may swing for them for a "wheelin" tire on the 80 yet...who knows...

find Dennie Mann's number somewheres...he's in SoDak and is reppin their stuff, and will give ya a good price....605-390-3140 (found it - cell/biz, leave a message)

The reason to get trxus is if you want to run them year round in serious snow conditions, as they are an amazing snow tire...far better than any AT I have run or seen in performance. I have yet to run into any conditions where these tires are deficient, but you'll be doing rotate balance every 3K at a max as a tradeoff.

If snow is not a major concern, then I think you'll find the MT/R's to be more balance friendly. I don't personally think too much about long term road wear in this tire class, because we'd ought to turn them into "spare use only" from offroad wear by the time the tread is half gone no matter which tire you choose :D

If you do go trxus, consider the 35x12.5x16...that is a larger tire than the 315 MT/R.

The Coopers look an awful lot like the Toyos if that style is of interest.

Nay

I wondered if the PitBulls where going to be a bit on the beasty side...I saw some of there "less" aggessive tires, which still looked pretty beastly.

I also noticed the Nitta Mud Grapplers but haven't seem to found ANY real world info on them...as cool as the "snake/raptor" skin is on the sidewall, I need a bit more info to go on rather than that ;)

It seems to be between the Trxxus and the Irok. Problem or benefit is that the IROK is only in a 36" as opposed to the 35 of the Trxxus. Not sure if I'd clear the 36" with Slee 4" springs.

It appears the IROK is more aggressive....hmmm

thanks for that number Woody, I'll give them a call, see what they say.

local shop installed a set of these....guy had them taken off the same day, the noise was unbearable....they do look kewl tho :D

How about Mickey Thompson MTZ? I just ordered a set - $823 shipped.

I was looking at the Truxus, as Sam's Off-Road (www.samsoffroad.com) has great prices on them, and they're local here in Tulsa. My brother sent me a link for the MTZ's at a great price, I called around trying to get something close on price, best I could get was sam's at about $230 a piece. I told the guy at Sam's about the other price, and that I was surprised cause he was much better priced than them on all the swamper line. He said he was a wholesale distributor on swampers, but that the $190.95 price I had was lower than his cost. I debated getting the Truxus, for no other reason than supporting a local buisness, but in the end, I just couldn't pass up that good a deal to run something no-one else is - as far as I know.

I'll post the link once I'm home - it's bookmarked on the home computer...

i am very disapointed with my truxxus. they won't balance and they don't clean in the mud. they get plugged up instantly no matter how fast you spin them. i do agree with the above tho they are good on snow and ice.

i wont buy another set, i am going back to my 33inch LTB's same ride quality and a much better offroad tire.

I have the new Cooper Discoverer STT's on my rig and although I have only had them for a few thousand miles, I have been happy with them thus far. They are quiet on the road (for a mud tire), have worked well for me in snow (I had the center lugs siped), and cleaned out quickly after wallowing in the mud. I suggest you give them a look.

I like my Truxus. I think they clean great in the mud if you give it a little skinny pedal. Also have been very impressed on the mileage i'm getting. I've had them on for about 30,000 miles and still have good tread on them.

They were tough to balance, but i have not had a problem needing them balanced every oil change. I think in the 30,000 miles i'v had them i've balanced them 3 times.

Like Nay said, they are awesome in the snow. I also think they are pretty darn good in the mud and side camber situations also. I don't have lockers and i've had good luck getting pretty much where i point the truck with those tires on.

BUT!!, i have had one tire that pulls. Considering i purchased the tires from 4wparts and they will only sell me a new one i doubt that there is much i can do. Other for the one bad tire i have, i have been very pleased and would consider another set.

so, 3 outta 4 are still good then....

last I checked, thats a "C" grade ;)

my 39.5 IROK's chunked a LOT for the 4 runs they've had...the PBR's are in much better condition, with 2x as many trips on them...and IMO, the traction was better too, particularly in the slick-surfaced hardpack...

I was looking at the Cooper Discovery and the 315/75R16's were 33.7" tall  gay...

So I'm sorta back a phase one...

Trxxus been about 50% on reviews
MT/R good, sidewall possible issues, runs smaller
IROK....mileage chunking concerns

I'm definitely interested in the MTZ's...started looking at them...I wonder how they compare strength wise to MT/R's Trxxus...etc...

definitely send me the link.

The Mickey Thompson's are 34.5"

Damn, those MTZ's have the exact same outer lugs as the trxus...I can't even tell them apart.

One question I have about this type of tire is lateral traction based on center lug design. That is probably the single thing I love most about the trxus. I haven't felt major pucker on a side slope since I got them, even on snow runs. I think that is why they are so kick ass as a road snow tire, too. Lateral traction is, IMO, the least considered and most important traction feature. When you lose lateral traction it often happens suddenly, and can be easy to over correct, on or offroad The trxus have always given me excellent feedback...they ease you into the limits like a good tire should.

As for deep gooey mud...none of these more road friendly MT's is going to be the absolute best because they don't have the lug spacing. We don't have that kind of mud in Colorado unless you really go looking for it, so I don't even consider extreme mud performance. For me it is snow, ice, and rock, and lateral traction on ledge roads. Trxus baby, trxus.

Do you think the MTZ's will be as strong as the TRXXUS? ply count and such? hmmm...I might be down for a set of these if the 315's are close to a 35"

EDIT::::

according to their chart, it's only 33.5" tall...which sucks...

I think they have a typo on their site - The Mickey Thompson site says 34.5"

I trusted mickey thompson's site.

that makes a little more sense...I'd guess the same size as an MT/R... decisions decisions...

do you have them yet? pics of them on your 80?
