Hi All,

I picked up my first 80 series a few weeks ago and I'm working my way through the interior...which was destroyed. Overall I'm pretty good with the mechanical parts, but stereos and electronics are an area that I simply can't wrap my mind around. So I'd love some help. I've tried plugging in what I have with exposed wires and it's not working.

A few question:
- Do I have the right wiring harness kit?
- If I do, what am I supposed to do with these loose wires?
- My buddy gave me this other piece (picture with the black end and three wires) and said I'd want it for wiring the DVD...but the colors aren't matching the exposed wires.

Other notes:
- Installing a Pioneer AVH-211EX double din
- Harness was from amazon / autoharnesshouse.com: P/N: AHH-70-1761
- 1996 FZJ80 Landcruiser

Any help would be appreciated otherwise I might take it to an installer. Seems like it should be easier than this though.

The extra wires are for optional features that you may or may not need. Certainly don't need them for basic functionality. From the Amazon description:
  • Reverse, Vehicle Speed, and E-brake signals are provided from the Pioneer connector. +12v switched (Red) and Ground (Black) connections are also provided for connection of a steering wheel control interface or other +12v device.
You'd only need the reverse for a back-up camera, and the e-brake for DVD I believe (as the headunits will only allow you watch a DVD while parked). The part your friend gave you is to bypass the parking restriction to allow DVD playback while driving, so it's only needed if you want to do that. I'm not familiar with the actual wiring setup for that though.

Use the reverse bulb wire in the rear d-side quarter panel so the camera is only powered when you’re in reverse. There’s a post showing exactly which wire. It might be in the Sony XV 100 install thread.

Ok...gonna try round 3 here in a few minutes. Plugging it in exactly as is with the exposed wires hanging out: It turns on for like 5 seconds and then completely shuts off. And It’s only good for one startup cycle...after that it just stays dark.

Plugged it in again and it still isn’t working. Do I need to disconnect the old amplifier?

Ebrake signal might be required for most settings, like EQ or audio controls. In my Pioneer unit, i just grounded the ebrake signal wire, so i can access all menus even while driving. They weren't accessible otherwise.

Dvds won't play though, since you have to cycle it off to on for them to be allowed. Doesn't bother me, since I wil never use that function.

check out Texas Know how on youtube. make sure to give the dude some likes so he gets his 10 cents

Alright. FINALLY got it working!

See that blue wire that loops back around in the second photo? Apparently that needed to be cut in half. Otherwise I’d have kept blowing a fuse under the hood. No idea why though.

Wire clipped and it all started to work out OK...
